Extractions: Two weeks before Christmas, when most Ontarians were preoccupied with Christmas festivities, the Ontario government announced its intention to pass new legislation regulating the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site not as a Provincial Park but under a new classification a "Recreation Reserve". The effect of announcing the new legislation was to reject the recommendations of the Local Stakeholders Committee which recommended regulating the Kawartha Highlands protected area as a Provincial Park. The impact of this new legislation will be to give maximum protection to the high impact recreational activities which have been taking place on the Crown lands which are the proposed areas for the new protected area, and minimum protection for the natural heritage, sensitive areas and ecosystems of the new protected area. The new legislation pays little or no attention to a number of issues raised by the public consultations and included in the recommendations of the Local Stakeholders Committee such as: Forest Reserves and future inclusion in the protected area, boundary issues, management body and partners, operating and funding status, future management planning processes, etc.

Extractions: By Del Albright I am proud of this organization. CA4WDC can really put on a show! The Sierra Trek was another notch in our successful history of great family fun. Not only fun, the 32 nd First of all, the event was well organized and fun; even-though it had to be post-poned from the original dates. Ive seldom witnessed such volunteer enthusiasm as we had on Trek. The Thursday short wheel base run even had volunteer staffing on some of the winch hills in spite of the fact that they didnt even have to "volunteer" for that day. My hat went off to those hard working clubs that adopt winch hills. Im also a fan of "Uncle Willie" who seems to relish in putting on a great Thursday run every year. Base camp was its usual neat and tidy self. Food was excellent and the entertainment was great fun. The Trek committee does one heck of a fantastic job with this huge event. Second, Trek is really a family event that draws us all together young and old. The kids are as much a part of four wheeling as the adults on this adventure. There were even miniature "jeeps" (battery powered) that executed some pretty cute maneuvers around camp. Kids helped with the snack bar and were the first ones on the dance floor when the band started up. This kind of outdoor fun really brings out the best in a family, if you ask me. I saw more dirty, but smiling faces on kids than you could shake a South Park tee shirt at. It was the smiles Ill remember.

RECREATION ADVOCATES PLEDGE VOLUNTEER HOURS Bernardino National Forest Off Highway Volunteers, and the California Associationof four Wheel Drive Clubs help restore recreation activities in California http://www.4x4wire.com/access/news/united/united_tpia.htm
Extractions: RECREATION ADVOCATES PLEDGE VOLUNTEER HOURS Recreation groups are joining U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton in supporting Take Pride in America. United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA) Director of Environmental Affairs John Stewart will present U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton with of pledge of 150,000 hours of volunteer work by recreation organizations to rehabilitate fire ravaged lands and help communities in need. Secretary Norton will be accepting pledges from Southern California organizations at a ceremony on December 31, 2003 in Pasadena, CA. Those pledges will be featured on a float during the Rose Parade. Recreation groups contributed volunteer efforts in the wake of the disastrous Southern California fires when members of the Tierra del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club of San Diego provided close to 600 hours aiding Red Cross and San Diego County with damage assessments. Volunteer efforts will continue through the coming year as the Warrior Society, Cleveland and San Bernardino National Forest Off Highway Volunteers, and the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs help restore recreation activities in California forests. Stewart estimates the 150,000 hours pledged as conservative. Each year clubs nationwide spend hundreds of hours cleaning and maintaining trails. The site may be the Rubicon Trail, a desert sand dune, or a country road in Virginia or New England. The action is many people caring about the environment and their recreation opportunities.

Extractions: Four-Wheeling Four-wheeling in Central Colorado is about high mountain passes, historic mining sites, scenic backcountry lakes, and fantastic vistas. No mud bogs or slow going rock crawling in this region of pine and aspen forests, 14,000-foot mountains, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear streams. To visit Colorado for "wheeling" is to experience world class trail riding. Many of the trails will cover quite some mileage before hitting a difficult obstacle, and when the climb takes you above the tree line the views are absolutely fabulous. One of the key elements in the Rockies is the altitudes, and the climbs to get there. Horsepower, low gearing, and a 'good working order' on your trail rig will go a long way. Many of the best riding areas are the summer range for deer, elk, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. Occasionally mountain lion and black bear are spotted in the backcountry. The mountain wilderness also includes many abandoned mountain homesteads and historic ghost towns, remnants of the original Colorado settlers, who came to the region to mine gold and silver. Some of the routes where first used by miners to reach their mining camps. Others follow the routes of old narrow gauge railroad right-of-ways. For those that don't have a four-wheel rig, local vendors offer jeep tours into some of the more popular areas. Or you can rent a jeep or other four-wheel drive vehicle.
