It is unique in that it is privately owned and is in a working forest setting. As such it has proven to be an excellent platform on which to build a sound scientific understanding of the complexities of managed forest systems, particularly as that relates to disturbance ecology and landscape ecology. More importantly, it is a compelling model for integrating academic, public and private sector assets in effectively achieving a widely shared goal, that of understanding forested ecosystems and ensuring their sustainability, particularly as it relates to biodiversity. The Elkins forum brings together nationally and internationally recognized leaders in conservation and forest science both to celebrate the accomplishments of the MeadWestvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest through its first decade, and to look to the future of sustainability and biodiversity of the world's forests.
