Creswick Campus

The campus is situated 120kms from Melbourne and just 10 minutes from Ballarat, Victoria's largest regional city. The Creswick campus was established as the Victorian School of Forestry in 1910. Today the campus offers a broad range of educational opportunities. It is the location for the 2nd and 3rd year of the University of Melbourne's Bachelor of Forest Science. An Advanced Diploma of Forestry Management and a number of TAFE programs are also offered on the Creswick campus and are run by the School of Forestry Ltd. on behalf of the University. Twenty-five to thirty postgraduate research students are also based on site undertaking projects in a range of forest disciplines. The Forest Science Centre , a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, is a new addition to the Creswick campus. The CRC for Wood Innovations and CRC for Catchment Hydrology are also based on site. These, together with the Forest Science Centre, provide state-of-the-art resources and a valuable learning environment for the University of Melbourne's undergraduate and postgraduate forestry students.

Extractions: Itasca Home The Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories is one of the oldest continuously operated inland field stations in the United States. The Station is located within Itasca State Park on the shores of Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River. The Station was opened in 1909, not long after the establishment of Itasca State Park by the State of Minnesota, and thus is an integral part of a well-protected ecosystem. It is the perfect place to study many organisms in their natural environments because the Station is near the intersection of the northern coniferous forest, the eastern deciduous forest, and the western prairie. The Itasca Biological Station and Laboratory is a unit of the College of Biological Sciences of the University of Minnesota. It is host to a large teaching program in the field sciences that is open to all college and university students in the U.S. or internationally. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at any institution of higher learning, you can enroll for one of our courses at the Station. These credits are fully transferable to your institution.

Our location in southern Arkansas, at the heart of the st ates forestry activity, allows students to rub elbows with professional foresters and land managers and learn first hand what you can't get in any classroom. We are accredited by the Society of American Foresters. Through our B.S. program we'll prepare you to assume positions in both public and private forestry, and to succeed in graduate school. The forestry major prepares you for a broad range of career opportunities involving the management, utilization or study of forest resources. Unlike coal, iron, oil and gas, forests hold a unique distinction as a renewable resource. Forests and the forest environment provide a diversity of valuable resources, including timber, water, wildlife, range, forage, recreation and wilderness. However, the management and protection of forests for a variety of products and services on a sustained basis require professional foresters who understand the complex ecological, economic and social issues facing natural resource management. Professional foresters are responsible for growing and harvesting trees while protecting forests against wildfires, insects, diseases, erosion and extremes of weather. Enhancement and protection of wildlife habitat and aesthetic values have become increasingly important in management strategies. Forest managers may be employed with private forestry consulting firms, state or federal agencies such as the Arkansas Forestry Commission and U.S. Forest Service, forest products companies, or other companies (such as oil, gas, and electric utilities) that own large tracts of forest land. Students receiving a degree in forestry also have the option of taking additional courses in biology and wildlife management to provide the expertise they would need for employment with wildlife management agencies.
