    Extractions: The SILVA Network, led by Wageningen foresters, is helping foster close cooperation between European universities, both for education and research. Wageningen staff give lectures in Spain and Sweden, and students from all over Europe will be able to follow international lectures through the Internet in the near future. The Virtual Forestry Academy is the newest plan to emerge from the network of foresters. The idea is to enable the different areas of expertise of the more than thirty university forestry departments in Europe to be utilised more efficiently. "Courses will be created for students from all over Europe, in which the introductory and concluding sessions are given in person by a lecturer, and the middle part takes place through e-mail and the Internet. It's still early days, but the SILVA Network makes this kind of experiment possible," says Professor Frits Mohren, chair of the Forest Ecology and Forest Management group at Wageningen University. The SILVA Network (European Forest Science Academic Network) was set up in 1989, as the result of an Erasmus exchange programme, at the initiative of a number of university lecturers including Dr Pieter Schmidt at Wageningen University. He was chair of the network until 1997.

Forestry majors at Sewanee will integrate traditional forestry courses (such as dendrology, silviculture, biometrics, forest ecology, and natural resource management) with a wide-ranging number of courses outside the department, including economics, biology, statistics, chemistry, and mathematics. Courses in geology, soils, hydrology, tropical and boreal forestry, wildlife management, and natural resource policy are also encouraged or required. A summer internship in a forestry-related field is strongly recommended. Forestry majors also may participate in a 3-2 program with Duke University, taking three years of work at Sewanee and two years at Duke, culminating in both a Sewanee's Bachelor's degree and a Duke Master's degree.
