Lifelines is a project by: Social Studies - Primary Documents Using Primary Source Documents Primary source documents are writings - whether historic or contemporary - that have been produced by first-hand participant/observers. They can be items such as letters, drawings, diaries, reports or memoirs. As students work with these types of documents in the classroom, they develop their interpretative and analytical abilities and become better able to understand the ways in which written history is colored by individual authors' personal and cultural points of view. Further, because these documents are real and personal, they make the study of history more exciting, compelling and human than facts, dates and events packaged in a textbook could ever do. This index of primary source documents contains many examples that may be useful to teachers preparing students to answer the document-based questions on the New York State Social Studies Regents exams. For additional information about how to use primary source documents and other types of primary materials - artifacts, images, artwork, film, and music, for example - the following sites may be helpful:

In this course, through improvisational scene work, theater games, and story telling, students will develop their ability to act and interact freely and perceptively. They will have the opportunity to study acting techniques and work at short scenes, learning to trust their abilities in new, untried situations, and taking risks that help develop confidence in their ability to think on their feet, whether in school, social or dramatic situations. They will also discover how to become more aware of their environment and how to be supportive of others. Improvisational theater helps students expand their creativity and, therefore, influences every area of life and studies.

Extractions: TEN TIPS FOR FUELING YOUR CHILD'S BRAIN POWER Developed by National PTA and Quaker Oatmeal en Español While all parents want to help their children succeed in school, sifting through the vast amount of information and research on the subject can be daunting. Most parents need easy-to-use, practical information that is readily accessible. National PTA and Quaker Oatmeal have put together the following research-based tips to help parents enhance learning in children. These tips encompass the recommendations set forth by research studies conducted over the past few decades and are simple to incorporate into your everyday lives. 1. Show your child love and affection Showing your children that you love and appreciate them and creating a caring environment at home triggers better memory recall, thinking and problem solving skills. While loving your children may seem obvious, emerging research suggests that encouraging and facilitating emotional balance in young children can result in positive behavioral outcomes, which in turn enhance learning ability. 2. Feed your child breakfast everyday
Received Pronunciation Pietro E. Reyes, posting in soc.culture.filipino; Teachers of English as a foreign Language were mentioned O Callaghan, posting in uk.culture.language.english; http://www.yaelf.com/rp.shtml
Extractions: Note: this is an exposure draft only. A pronunciation of British English, originally based on the speech of the upper class of southeastern England and characteristic of the English spoken at the public schools and at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Until recently it was the standard form of English used in British broadcasting. An overview of "Received Pronunciation" More notes on Pronunciations of English ([David CRYSTAL: The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language. Cambridge University Press, 1995. ISBN: 521 40179 8.]): In England, one accent has traditionally stood out above all others in its ability to convey associations of respectable social standing and a good education. This "prestige" accent is known as RECEIVED PRONUNCIATION, or RP. It is associated with the south-east, where most RP-speakers live or work, but it can be found anywhere in the country. Accents usually tell us where a person is from; RP tells us only about a person's social or educational background. In due course, RP came to sybolize a person's high position in society. During the 19th century, it became the accent of public schools, such as Eton and Harrow, and was soon the main sign that a speaker had received a good education. It spread rapidly throughout the Civil Service of the British Empire and the armed forces, and became the voice of authority and power. Because it was a regionally 'neutral' accent, and was thought to be more widely understood than any regional accent, it came to adopted by the BBC, when radio broadcasting began in the 1920s. During WW2, it became linked in many minds with the voice of freedom, and the notion of a "BBC pronunciation" grew.
