The group's 60 members are from two ethnic groups that have been at odds. Confrontations grew out of crop destruction by cattle and encroachment on grazing areas by farmers seeking land for crops. - Begun five years ago by UNDP with support from the European Union, the pilot project has worked with the group to carefully integrate crops and livestock over a 140 hectare area to limit conflicts, improve animal production and farmers' livelihoods and conserve the unique environment, the UN agency reports today.

Extractions: INTRODUCTION People usually see the question: "What is the image of man in our indigenous culture?" as connoting any one of the following three sub-questions: a) What is man? b) What is the nature of man? c) Who is man? The first sub-question`What is man'?is an empirical question which may yield an answer based upon an objective description of man's observable behaviour. Such answers as `Man is a bio-social being', `Man is an aggressive and predacious being', or `Man is a sexual being' are the consequences of empirical investigations based on such a question. `What is the nature of man?' strictly speaking is a metaphysical question, even though some people take it to mean the same as `who is man?' As a metaphysical question it asks for what constitutes the elements of man's being. The essence of man's being is often a matter of speculation, and one may come across such answers as `Man is a spiritual being', `Man is a rational being', `Man is nothing but matter', `Man is both matter and spirit', or `body and mind'. Such speculative views of man vary from one school of thought to another, and are based upon one's metaphysical presuppositions. `Who is man?' on the other hand, refers to man's understanding of himself. Because one understands oneself in a certain way, one projects a certain image and becomes responsible for

Extractions: Reviewed by Pip Hinman It's not surprising that the unfolding of these historic times in South Africa should be reflected in African music. Angelique Kidjo's new album Ay or Life's Beginning, in which she has manages to blend traditional and modern, is no exception. Kidjo was born into a musical family in the tiny west African country of Benin. Her mother is a choreographer and theatre group director and her brothers are instrumentalists. Growing up in Benin in the '70s, she was influenced not only by its traditional folk styles and love songs, but also by the new urban African music from the south, including James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix and Miriam Makeba. Paris in the 1980s, where Angelique was based, was a breeding ground for new African music. African artists freed from the constraints of tradition yet incorporating their roots in Western styles, were generating, with the help of guitars, drums, soukous and mbalax, a new type of music. As in her other albums, Angelique sings in her mother tongue, Fon, apart from two songs sung in one of Nigeria's languages. Ay is about the world's diverseness and inconsistencies. With scenes of the carnage in Rwanda (and before that Somalia) being flashed across TV screens every night, it doesn't seem coincidental that Ay includes a number of songs depicting people's pain and suffering.
