We are lacking the "what by when" specificity. That may be something on which the CIA committee may be able to provide the Board input. Chuck the committee has been nice but no real purpose. Id like to have a specific charge from the Board. Judi I hear the same from other committees others concurred. Terri explained committee formation and that the Board will consider the advice of the committee. Board policy does not state how often the committees need to meet. Perhaps they can work on an ad hoc basis. Judy Can the committee provide input on other issues? Sometimes there are legislative issues regarding teaching and leaving, FCAT, and so forth. Carl Shared experiences on several committees prior to this. Board saw these committees as a way of getting input from community members outside of the traditional PTAs, PTOs and parent booster groups. Concurs that we need more direction from the Board. Chuck Encourage Board to use this committee as a sounding board I.E. "what kind of communication strategies might you suggest to communicate with the public in a more effective way?"

Reporting Student Progress The district must annually report in writing to the student and his/her parent or legal guardian the student's results on each statewide assessment test. The progress of students toward achieving state and district requirements for proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics shall be reported to each student and his/her parents or legal guardian quarterly. The evaluation of each student's progress must be based upon the student's classroom work, observations, tests, district and state assessments and other relevant information. Each semester, high schools will report to parents of those students in grades 9-12 whose quarter grade point average , semester grade point average, or cumulative grade point average is 2.5 unweighted or below that the student is at risk of not meeting the grade point average requirement for graduation. This will serve to notify the parent or legal guardian of the grade point requirement for graduation and inform them of policies in place to address the issue. The district must assist students in achieving the grade point average required for graduation.

Extractions: Scripps Howard News Service The name "PTA" may conjure up images of moms working closely with schools, carnivals and other money-raising efforts, and of close relationships between parents and those who teach their children. Increasingly, that image comes not from PTAs, but from "PTOs" or Parent Teacher Organizations, independent parent groups that choose to organize at schools without any affiliation to the national Parent Teacher Association. Why the change? Parent activists are finding an increasing divide between the purposes of their state and national PTA leaders and their own objectives. And they're therefore withdrawing their memberships and forming PTOs. Since 1966, PTA membership has dropped from 12 million to 6.6 million, even as student enrollment has risen from 31 million to 52 million. In response to budgetary cutbacks, the PTA raised its dues a few years ago and 400,000 members dropped their membership. This spring, parents in 22 school districts in Utah dropped out. In some states, PTA membership has dropped as low as six percent. Two reasons for these departures seem to dominate, and the national PTA appears unwilling to address either.
