Extractions: Bulletin Intern Students aspiring for a career in space - or engineering, research or computers on Earth will be able to launch their futures at an aerospace program at Martinsville Middle School. Martinsville schools received a $475,000 grant from NASA to fund an Aerospace Education Laboratory (AEL) and a Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) program at Martinsville Middle School, a group of local and federal officials announced Monday. The lab, to be set up by NASA officials at the middle school, will contain 10 work stations in which the students will learn how applied math, science and engineering is used by the space program. The stations include a flight simulation lab that will teach students how to land a space shuttle, a wind tunnel lab in which students will learn how air flows over different types of airplanes and several computer simulator labs that will demonstrate the principles of flight. Each station will be designed with the equipment to teach kindergartners through 12 graders. Several of the labs also involve team activities so the students will learn to work together to develop problem solving skills.

Extractions: Students explore the surface of Mars and fly over green fields in the new Aeronautics Education Lab at Martinsville Middle School. "It's a wonderful program," said Terry Wiita, director of the lab. "It's a lot of activity, and the subjects are in tune with what they (students) are learning in their regular science classes." The lab was funded by a $475,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) through its Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) program. Equipment was installed in the lab in October, including computer hardware and software, a wind tunnel and a flight simulator. "Everyone wants to do the flight simulator," Wiita said, gesturing to the seat in front of a large curved screen and a joystick. "I've got at least one student in each class who's pretty good at it." Sixth- and seventh-graders must choose the class as an elective, and they rotate through every nine weeks. During that time, they learn the basics of aeronautics and go through a program called "Gate to Gate," which involves planning a flight from San Francisco to New York City.

Join EAA KidVenture is supported by The unique array of aircraft and activities gracing the flight line at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh generates plenty of attention and excitement, especially among youngsters. However, if kids of any age want a safe and fun hands-on aviation experience, a visit to KidVenture is essential. Nestled behind the museum's Eagle Hangar on the quiet side of the EAA convention grounds, KidVenture's campus has become a prominent fixture of AirVenture's landscape. Where else can kids get the chance to build their own model rockets and balsa planes, fly in a high-tech flight simulator, soar above the KidVenture campus in a tethered hot air balloon, and meet aviation legends? Thanks to longtime sponsor Nestlé-Nesquik and an army of volunteers largely from EAA Chapter 790 of northern Illinois, KidVenture, now in its fifth year, keeps getting better. While toddlers tool around in the pedal-plane corral, bigger kids can climb into a virtual homebuilt biplane with its controls configured to fly a mission on Microsoft Flight Simulator. The wide variety of simulators found at KidVenture take them anywhere, from NASA space missions to Wright brothers' adventures to radio-controlled model simulators.

Toddlers learn to walk on their own with their parents standing by as guides, providing a safe environment that makes it possible for the child to learn. When a child enters the "formal education" system, unfortunately this rich environment of learning by doing often disappears. The education system is still stuck in the industrial age with classrooms more often designed for teaching rather than for learning purposes. Desert Survival Situation , a decision simulation. Generally in a simulation, a scenario is presented, the student is required to act, the student reacts, and the system changes in response to this action. a ttention, r elevance, c onfidence and s atisfaction). It presents a problem to be solved, allows the learner to make choices, shows the consequences of those choices, and builds confidence in the learner when the problem is mastered. There are five major characteristics of simulations: Simulations are problem-based units of learning that are set in motion by a particular task, issue, policy, crisis, or problem. The problems to be addressed by the participant may be either implicit or explicit, depending on the nature of the simulation.
