Extractions: Causes A: Probably 80-90% of diseases in captive fish can be prevented by avoiding stress. Stress weakens fishes' immune systems, leading to increased susceptibility to disease. Actually, diseases and pathogens are almost always present in tanks, but a healthy fish's immune system will prevent them from being a problem. Some of the most common stressors for captive fish are: Poor water quality: measurable ammonia or nitrites, or very high nitrates. The water temperature is fluctuating more than 2 deg F/day Incompatible species in the tank. Too many fish in the tank (5 adult angelfish in 10g tank). The tank is too small for the fish (foot long fish in 10g tank). The water is too warm or too cold for the species (goldfish vs. tropicals). wrong pH for species (Discus vs. African cichlids) pH fluctuations greater than 0.2 units/day. Insufficient cover or hiding places present. Wrong water hardness for the species (Discus vs. African cichlids). Insufficient oxygen in the water.

Extractions: Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758 The Carp is a native of Asia, but extensive introductions have helped to make it the world's most widely distributed freshwater fish. Three strains of Carp have been introduced to Australia, an ornamental strain near Sydney (1850-60), a Singaporean strain in the Murrumbidgee (1876), and a hybrid "Boolara" strain in Victoria (1961). The latter two strains have interbred and this species is now a major pest in many inland streams in New South Wales. The Carp is recognised by its small eyes, thick lips with two barbels at each corner of the mouth, large scales and strongly serrated spines in the dorsal and anal fins. The colour is variable, but often olive green to silvery grey dorsally, fading to silvery yellow on the belly. Small Carp could be confused with Goldfish, Carassius auratus . The latter however has no barbels on the corners of the mouth. Carp are reported to grow to over one metre in length, and 60kg in weight. In Australia, this species reaches 10kg, but 4-5kg is more usual. They are omnivorous, sucking and straining mud from the bottom and sucking insects and plants from the surface. Extractions: One of America's prized gamefish, the largemouth bass seems to grow to unusually large size in Florida waters. This black bass is an elongated sunfish, whose distinguishing feature, aside from the exceptionally large mouth, is a deep notch in the dorsal fin. In most northern states, the species seems to reach a maximum of ten pounds; in Florida 20-pound catches are not uncommon. The habitat is a quiet water containing bountiful vegetation. Each spring, males dig nests by brushing clear a circular area over a gravel bottom. Then females lay up to 25,000 eggs! The eggs become fingerlings in three to six days, and remain in schools as they grow. Once mature, however, the largemouth bass tends to be a loner. The 1975 Florida legislature adopted a bill that became Chapter 15.036 of the Florida Statutes, designating the Florida bass (Micropterus salmoides floridanus) as the official State Freshwater Fish.
