Bob Miller's Light Walk: Making A Pinhole Camera Stepby-step instructions and diagrams show how to make a pinhole camera from a 126 film cartridge. http://www.exploratorium.edu/light_walk/camera_todo.html
Extractions: An ordinary camera has a lens that makes an image on film. In a pinhole camera. a small hole replaces the lens. You can construct a pinhole camera using: The diagram shows the basic construction of a pinhole camera. The body of the camera is a cardboard box that is open at both ends. To make this box, cut a rectangle of cardboard that measures 5 3/4 inches by 2 inches. Divide the long edge of the rectangle into four equal sections. as shown. Use your knife to score the cardboard along each of the lines. Fold the cardboard along the scores to make an open-ended box. Before you tape the edges together to make a box, you need to make the interior black to minimize reflection of light within the camera. You can cut a piece of black paper and fold it to make a black lining for your box, or you can cover the inside surface of the cardboard with strips of black tape. You could also paint the inside flat black with spray paint or tempera. Now tape the edges together to make a box, and tape all the box's edges and corners to prevent light from leaking into the camera.

Most student films feature two thingsa not particularly attractive girl running towards the camera, and a suicide. If it's a comedy, it features a not particularly attractive girl and a dog. I should know. I made one, and so did my son. But these kids are stealing jobs from me, so they must be doing something right." Chuck Workman

Thompson's epochal tale of drug-enhanced Sin City paranoia, has finally gone respectable. Even the more repugnant of Dr. Gonzo's neon hallucinations have come to life in a new film, starring Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro and directed by the visionary behind "Brazil" and "12 Monkeys," Terry Gilliam. Extractions: It's rare that I see a movie the first day it comes out. I think the last time I saw a movie the day it was released, my mom took me to see The Last Action Hero I take that back; I saw Beavis and Butthead Do America on its opening day. People were sitting in the aisles for that one. Which is precisely why I hate going to theatres for a film's first showing. It's crowded, loud and packed with more fans of the genre ("the director really is making a strong statement about the complexity of life by the use of blah, blah, blah ...") than you can shake a stick at.

Extractions: Remove Ads Support RinkWorks Subscriber Login "Daddy, why can't I have a monkey?" Set in the bustle of Los Angeles, this star-studded Robert Altman cinematic tapestry tells the interlocking stories of a host of characters. Tapestry is precisely the right word. Each character is a thread in said tapestry, who contributes to the big picture, interacts with other characters who also contribute to the big picture, but really have no conception as to what the big picture looks like. "Real life" films rarely interest me. This one fascinates me. I was not expecting to love it so I expected fine filmmaking, but not necessarily fine entertainment. Short Cuts does several things with smashing success: it is an upstanding example of cinematic art, it is engrossing entertainment, it is hilariously funny, it is poignant and moving, and it inspires an awe rarely evoked by every day life. Within the days that the film takes place, there are momental events that take place, which the characters will never forget as long as they live, and there are the routine events that occur and are forgotten. All of these are somehow made fascinating in some way. Frances McDormand's story, for instance, about her affair with a married man and a malicious ex, borders on hysteria. There are no punchlines it's pure situational humor, in the uncorrupted sense of the term and induced greater laughter in myself than most pure comedies can do. Andie MacDowell's story, on the other hand, evokes our utmost concern and compassion, more so than most pure dramas can.

Extractions: : What do you feel about the modern mass media? CG : The media is a huge problem now in societies. They have to play probably the most important role because every day people try to see what is happening. So they have both an educational and informational role to play. Of course they depend on money and also too much on success and sometimes on politics and politicians and all this, and it's a big problem. I think the worst thing to happen in this world would be that with regard to television, the state starts to say this is like the army. This is like education, it has to belong to the state, to elected people. They let it to private people and this is a tragedy I believe, because all the garbage you can see on television. And, of course, that also influences the other media because everybody runs after the audiences, it's the worst thing. Fortunately there are some good ones here and there, not so many but there are some good ones. It's important to look around and try to find them. : I'd just like to say that I first watched your films at 15 years of age and they politicised me. Now I'm a film studies teacher.
