Research Grant Proposal - Joshua Mosley United States) and span disciplines (film lighting, direction and our developing languagesof integrated media. towards further research in collaborative work. http://joshuamosley.com/Beyrouth/html/researchgrant.html
Extractions: Excerpt from Application for Research Grant Abstract The principal aim of the proposed study is to negotiate successful creative collaborations with artists of other disciplines. The completion of this research would yield an exquisite eight-minute computer animated opera. The digital work would be a composite of human performance, computer animation, and original music. This work requires the exploration of original cutting-edge processes of computer animation. The proposer would collaborate with a music director, seven vocalists, a sound engineer, and a small film production crew. Background - Contemporary Collaborative Work in Cinema We are approaching a new Renaissance, in which artists and scientists from every discipline are meeting in the creation of fantastic new media art forms. Hybrid works incorporating new languages and ideas of theater, music, computer engineering, cinema, genetic engineering, astronomy, painting, biology, architecture, animation, poetry, and literature are emerging. Many of these works over-consciously tote the interdisciplinary aspect of their works as being revolutionary, some may prove to transform our lives. The value can be quantified in several ways. We can think about the value of the work itself, which when viewed by a general audience, allows for interpretations that tend to explore human culture in the said work as a complex, interrelated network of metaphoric ideas. Secondly, by creating new formulas of expression in these works, we revitalize our methods of research. These collaborations offer opportunities of discovery for finding the role of digital media in fine art practices. Thirdly, when we collaborate with masters of other media, possibly from other nations, we deepen the implications of our research and expand the language of our work. And finally, by collaborating we find the opportunity to make fantastic large-scaled works, consisting of interlocking, well-crafted components.

All aspects of NCSA are carried out within a major research university. At the founding of the NSF Centers program 10 years ago, there were those who questioned whether a university could successfully manage such a critical, national-scale program. History has shown that the integration of the program into the university environment has resulted in much of the uniqueness and synergy leading to rapid advances in scientific knowledge, application software development and technology transfer.

ACLS/SSRC Cuba Working Group: Recent Activities The project involves transporting Cuban film and videotapes completion of a collaborativeempirical study de Estudiantes de Enseñanza media (FEEMFederation http://www.acls.org/cu-activ.htm
Extractions: Other Activities Sponsored by the Working Group In June, 2001 the Working Group on Cuba will hold a workshop with leading Cuban, US and international librarians and archivists to consider future priorities for preservation and access in the libraries and archives of Cuban scholarly and cultural institutions. The meeting will be held in Havana, and will address various items of concern, including the digitization of records and the construction and maintenance of OPACs in both libraries and archives. Discussion will also address microfilming and digitization of books, serials and manuscripts; training of personnel; and the equipment and physical plant improvements necessary to achieve the goals of world-class access and preservation. Roughly fifteen Cuban and ten North American leading authorities will meet to share their various perspectives on distinct aspects of library and archive modernization. Following the workshop, select participants will draft a report outlining suggested priorities for future investment in the institutions. Funds for this effort are provided by the Ford Foundation. In June of 1999 the ACLS/SSRC Working Group on Cuba began the first of a two- year series of five workshops in Cuba on International Cooperation. Over the past 2 years, some 60 Cuban researchers have attended sessions held by experts from Europe, North and Latin America. The workshops are designed to better inform the Cuban academic community about the mechanisms by which international agencies identify priorities, solicit proposals or evaluate projects for support. The initiative constitutes a response to perceived needs of Cuban researchers who have limited experience working with international funding institutions that typically provide support on a project-specific basis. The workshops seek not only to educate the community, but also to guide participants through the proposal-drafting process. The final workshop in the series will be held in the fall of 2000.

Extractions: Next chapter In recent years, the University of Aarhus has extended its IT-related activities considerably. The university, the county, the city and the business community have succeeded in joining forces to launch a broad initiative aimed at transforming Katrinebjerg the neighbourhood bordering the north-west corner of the University Park into an IT Town. This is where the regions IT activities are being brought together to form a synergetic community. The IT Council for the Aarhus region has defined the Katrinebjerg IT growth centre as the core of its efforts, and this project is the regions most significant investment in business cooperation between Jutland and the island of Funen, a collaborative project run by the counties and municipalities in these provinces and the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs. The Municipality of Aarhus has adopted a new plan for the area intended to promote the transformation of Katrinebjerg into the IT Town. The IT Council has proposed that the centre be extended to include a range of activities and subsidiary projects that will promote a cohesive environment of IT companies, research and educational centres and a breeding ground for new IT companies. Other ideas include laboratory facilities for the areas educational institutions, special study cells and project rooms for students, entertainment facilities and more.
