Extractions: History: During the 1970s, the gradual process of dismantling the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Palau, the Northern Marianas, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshalls began, as internal self-government was granted and negotiations on full independence got underway. In 1983, the Marshall Islands assembly (the Nitijela ) agreed the Compact of Free Association with the US government, which set down the terms under which the Marshall Islands would become a sovereign self-governing nation. The USA retained responsibility for the defence and security of the islands, also setting down guidelines for the conduct of the Marshalls future foreign policy. US$30 million annual aid has been provided by Washington, in exchange for the continued use of existing military bases. (The original 15-year period covering that part of the agreement was extended. A new Compact came into force in September 2003). The Marshalls now belong to the South Pacific Forum, the main regional grouping, and in 1991 were admitted to the UN.

"After years of level funding and increasing demand, its nice to be able to fund more valuable work that can improve producers bottom line, protect the environment and strengthen communities," said Phil Rasmussen, regional coordinator of Western SARE and a soil scientist at Utah State University. Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education proposals and Professional Development proposals were selected to receive funding for farming techniques dealing with: disease and pest control; pollution prevention; water conservation; composting for soil building and nutrient waste management; alternative cropping systems (including agroforestry); market enhancement; and system diversification, among other related sustainable agriculture topics.

Pacific News member of Micronesia Federal States of Micronesia (FSM) Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap, are four island states of more than 600 tiny islands and atolls, stretching almost the entire width of Micronesia , 1,800 miles across the Pacific from east to west. Known as the Federated States of Micronesia, each speaks its own language with its own distinctive culture, traditions and history. None of the bright lights of Guam and Saipan are to be found here. A more traditional island lifestyle prevails, surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the islands and their seas. An integral part of Continental Micronesia's 'Island Hopper' route across Micronesia, the FSM attracts the more adventurous traveller, such as experienced sports divers, underwater photographers, hikers and backpackers. Both Kosrae and Pohnpei are situated far to the east of the group and share a similar climate and geography. They are high volcanic islands with cloud shrouded peaks, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and hidden mountain pools. They share the same pristine, fringing coral reefs, clear azure seas, mangroves and sandy beaches. The Lelu ruins reached its peak in the 12th century. Nan Madol, however, began construction as early as 500 AD and was toppled by the present day traditional government in the 1520's.

Extractions: The Federated States of Micronesia (formerly part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands) comprise 705 sq km, made up of 607 scattered islands (mostly atolls but also mountainous islands of volcanic origin) of the Central Pacific with an EEZ of 2,978,000 sq. km. The islands are geographically part of the Carolines. The major islands of the FSM, now the member states, are Kosrae, Yap, Pohnpei and Chuuk. Population is about 112,000 and the federal capital is on the island of Pohnpei. Languages are English and Micronesian. Currency is the $US. Briefly, the economy comprises fishing, agriculture and forestry, with copra, bananas and fish making up most exports. Imports are comprised mostly of manufactured goods and foodstuffs. The GNP was $US213 million, or $US1962 per head, in 1996. Under the Compact of Free Association which was ratified with the US in 1986, the US retains responsibility for defence and is committed to providing regular economic assistance. The FSM is headed by a President, supported by a 14 member National Congress. The Congress elects the President, who in turn selects members to serve in the Cabinet. Each of the four constituent states also has its own legislature and governor. The national Constitution defines federal responsibilities, such as immigration, taxes and tariffs, currency regulation, banking, navigation, shipping and development of national resources. The individual states are responsible for their own regional development, health and education.
