Extractions: Federated States Of Micronesia The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are the western Pacific island states of Chuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap. ("Micronesia" was the former common term for virtually the entire Pacific island area.) Formerly part of the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, FSM is an independent nation that entered into a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. The compact will expire in 2001. Negotiations of the terms of a new compact will begin at the end of 1997. Capital: Palikir, on the island state of Pohnpei President: His Excellency Leo Falcam Population: Fifty percent live in Chuuk State, thirty percent in Pohnpei State, twelve percent in Yap State, and eight percent in Kosrae State. Geography: Major Hazards: FSM is subject to tropical storms and typhoons as well as drought. Earthquakes are also a possibility, since the islands are in the proximity of several Pacific Ocean faults. Other hazards include tsunami, drought, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, and epidemics.
Extractions: Date: Autumn 1995 General Characteristics The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a chain of 607 small islands in the Western Pacific about 2,500 miles west of Hawaii. FSMs total land area amounts to only 270.8 square miles scattered over more than one million square miles of the Pacific, extending 1,700 miles from the east (Kosrae) to the west (Yap). The 130 square mile Island of Pohnpei is the largest in the FSM and home of the countrys capital and civic center. FSM emerged as a nation from the former United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) administered by the United States from the end of World War II until its dissolution in 1994 when its last member, Palau, became an independent nation. Palau, which lies west of FSM, completes the Caroline Island chain. FSM is a heterogeneous mix of peoples with different customs and traditions united by common cultural and economic bonds that are centuries old. There are at least 8 major indigenous languages and none is spoken throughout the nation. Instead, every state has a language of its own and the common language of commerce and government is English. Many people are familiar with Japanese because of 3 decades of Japanese rule before World War II. FSMs currency is the US dollar. As in most developing economies in the Pacific, population is growing rapidly, averaging 3 percent annually since the 1950s. However, with easy emigration to the United States, about 2 percent of the FSM population leaves the country for the United States annually, reducing the effective population growth rate to one percent.

Despite being firmly tied to the USA's economic and political apron strings, the Federated States of Micronesia are doggedly hanging onto their traditional ways. The Micronesians are proud of their past, especially since they were navigating the Pacific before Columbus was a glint in Queen Isabella's eye. The laid-back islands have some of the world's best wreck diving, and are considered an untouristed haven for beach bunnies and scuba groovers.
