Father's Day is observed the third Sunday of June every year. It was started with the suggestion of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington to honor her father, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, who reared his six motherless children alone on an eastern Washington farm. Like Mrs. Dodd, we give thanks to God on this day for the gift of fatherhood, honoring our fathers and reflecting on what it means to be a father.

I'm told that when I was a small child, perhaps three years of age, we lived in a one-bedroom apartment. My little bed was located beside the bed of my parents. Dad said it was not uncommon during that time for him to awaken at night and hear a little voice whispering, "Daddy? Daddy?" He would answer quietly, "What, Jimmy?" Then I would reply, "Hold my hand!" My dad would reach across the darkness and grope for my little hand, finally

It's borne remarkable fruit in the days since its rediscovery, and I recommend it warmly. You many find a lengthy excerpt from the book here . The basic idea is to present a daily reading from the Rule of Saint Benedict , followed by a commentary by Mr. Longenecker on its application to fatherhood. Fortunately for us, Mr. Longenecker, unlike many of his Benedictine confreres, is solidly orthodox. Yet others might answer eternal life. None of these is incorrect. But I think the best answer would be communion. Communion with God. Being inserted into that cycle of love which is the archetype of communion .the Blessed Trinity.

Extractions: Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards . In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Extractions: Isaiah 64:1-9; Fathers' Day Today is Father's day and we want to ask God's blessings upon fathers. Fathers, like all parents, who take their calling as father seriously, have a great responsibility. It is not so much what you say and teach, but who you are that is important. I only realised it after it had happened, how influential our being is to those who love us. Children are very intuitive. They can separate the wheat from the chaff. May our being fathers radiate a little of God to those who take us seriously. You know that the Bible and Jesus called God "father". Not only "father". They also called God "mother" and "shepherd" and "king". But father has become a dominant description for God. That adds another responsibility upon us. We don't only want to be good fathers for our children, but we also want to protect the dignity of the word "father" so that it can become a suitable vehicle to speak of God And in that regard the fathers of this world have not fared to well. We hear of fathers

When God ordained the family, He created several relationships that help teach us how much God the Father loves us. The earthly father relationship is a role that teaches about God. The wave of emotion that comes over a new father upon his firstborn child is incredible. The joy and love that is felt when caring for a child that grows right in front ofyour eyes into a person is a picture of the love our heavenly Father has for us as we grow and mature in fellowship with Him. God the Father loves us beyond what we can comprehend... but the scripture shows us many ways how God has provided for us... as the love of a father cares for his children. Extractions: June 19, 1998 By Eloise Anderson Where would we be without fathers? Sadly, the answer is clear. In 1960, about eighty percent of children in the United States lived with both parents. Today, only about 50 percent of children will spend their entire childhood in an intact family. When families disintegrate, children often end up with intellectual, physical and emotional scars that last a lifetime. Studies show that fatherless children are at a dramatically greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy and criminal behavior. That's why it's important to restore the presence of fathers in the home and re-emphasize and celebrate the connection between dads and their kids. Fathers are an integral part of their children's growth from day one. Researchers have linked a father's presence with improved fetal and infant development. When the connection between children and fathers is established soon after birth, fathers are more likely to remain involved in the lives and futures of their children. And when fathers are involved in their children's lives, their children have higher self-esteem, and live healthier, happier lives. Fathers teach girls about affection. Girls learn the difference between affection and sex from their fathers, not their mothers. Fathers are the ones who teach girls what it's like to be held without it being sexual. The father is the one who begins to let girls understand that affection doesn't have to lead to sex. Girls who come from families where there are no fathers are one-and-a-half times more likely to get pregnant during their teenage years than girls who come from a family whose fathers are there.
