History Of Fashion Designer John Redfern

Extractions: In 1853, John Redfern was born in England. In the 1850's, he worked as a tailor and by 1871 he had extended his business to sell silk and mourning clothes. The town of Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, where he lived, became a centre of the yachting world at the end of the 19th century, and so he began designing sports clothes for women. In 1881, he created a costume worn by Lillie Langtry, the mistress of the Prince of Wales who subsequently became King Edward 7th. In the same year, he established businesses in London and Paris, followed later by branches in Edinburgh and New York. His son Ernest took charge of the London and New York branches and Charles Poynter looked after his Paris salon. By 1885 Redfern was producing yachting suits, travelling suits and riding habits. In 1888 he was appointed dressmaker to Queen Victoria. Redfern helped popularize the high-waisted so-called Grecian style of 1908. In 1916, he created the first women's uniform for the Red Cross. Redfern closed his house in the 20's and died in 1929.

Extractions: Narciso Rodriguez was born in Newark, New Jersey, USA, in 1961. He was the son of a Cuban dock worker who came originally from the Canary Islands.. He grew up in a poorer part of New Jersey. His parents were not very enthusiastic about his chosen career, fashion design. Fashion is not a very macho pursuit in Cuban society. He studied fashion design at Parson's School of Design, New York. He started his career as a designer under Donna Karan at Anne Klein, then switched to Calvin Klein where he worked on that designers coat collection and fur line (since discontinued) In 1995, he was named design director of TSE, New York and after that he designed for one year at Cerruti in 1996. His designs for Cerruti were very well received and he became the hot new designer in town. This did not go down very well with Nino Cerruti, so he did not renew his contract. Cerruti's loss was ABS's gain. ABS is America's best loved copy cat brand name manufacturer. It sells versions of the real thing for much lower prices. In between, he has made arrangements to design clothes under his own label which are to be made in Milan by the Aeffe factories of Alberta Ferretti.

Paul Smith, Katharine Hamnett, Nicole Farhi, Clements Ribeiro and Burberry have all decided not to show their latest ranges at next week's event, the British Fashion Council confirmed. The designers said they felt it was inappropriate that the show was still taking place. But the BFC said the majority of designers were keen for the event to go ahead. British Fashion Council Paul Smith said it was not appropriate to stage a fashion show "so soon after these tragic events and while there is still so much uncertainty in the aftermath". Katharine Hamnett told the Independent newspaper it was "completely inappropriate" for the event to go ahead in light of the devastating attacks.
