Mark Sensen , 1995-SEP-26 The flag of the Faroes was first made by Faroese students in Copenhagen and later brought to the Faroes where it was first hoisted 22 June 1919. About a decade, in 1931, later it came into common but unofficial use. When Denmark was occupied by German forces in April 1940, British troops took the islands and a need to distinguish the ships of the Faroes from those of occupied Denmark occurred. On 25 April 1940 British authorities approved the flag as the ensign of the Faroes. With the Home Rule Act of 23 March 1948 the flag was finally recognized as the national flag of the Faroes. 25 April has been made Flag Day. The flag carries the name Merkid , meaning the sign or banner. The dominant white colour is said to represent the pure sky as well as the foam of the waves breaking against the coasts of the islands, red and blue are both colours found in traditional Faroese headdress. At the same time the colours are those of the flags of Norway and Iceland. The proportions are 6-1-2-1-6 (hoist), 6-1-2-1-12 (fly).

Extractions: NEW! The Faroe Islands, in the North Atlantic, are the home of a small Nordic nation which has a very distinctive and heart warming culture. Made up of eighteen islands, sixteen of which are inhabited, the Faroes lie midway between the northernmost Scottish Islands and Iceland. The population of 47 thousand people are spread among about 100 villages and small towns. The main language is Faroese (close to the original old Viking language). The people are also able to speak Danish and many of them other languages too, including English. Faroese was not written down until the last century and the language, together with the history, has been passed down through the centuries in a remarkable oral tradition in which the sagas are chanted in ring dances - a tradition that is still alive and well today. The first known mention of the Faroe Islands in Bahá'í history is from texts written in 1916/17 by Abdu'l-Bahá and known as "Tablets of the Divine Plan". The first Bahá'í to live in Faroes was Eskil Ljungberg from Sweden. He arrived in 1953 and stayed for the rest of his life. He died in Tórshavn (the capital of Faroes) in 1985 at the age of 98. on his 98th birthday The Faroe Islands are very rugged and beautiful and are a haven for innumerable sea birds. The islands jut out of the North Atlantic defying the elements and, although this is where the first Baha'i conference of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe took place (in 1974), the climate is surprisingly mild due to the gulf stream. The land is very green and the houses very colourful (no skyscrapers). There are few trees, lots of sheep, modern shopping centres, excellent sports facilities, plenty of fresh unpolluted air, peace and tranquillity. For those who like to experience nature in all its moods, the clear air and sunshine is interspersed with intermittent rain, fog and the occasional storm :) . The people are kindhearted and friendly.

I can say that because i live in Iceland! In Place: Spatial and Social Order in a Faeroe Islands Community Published in Paperback by Waveland Press (January, 1996) Author: Dennis Gaffin Average review score: Useful For Academics This is a fine book about the wee islands in the North Atlantic. But beware: It's heavy stuff for those just looking for travel descriptions and easy-to-access material on the subject. Having said that it is a gem if you are interested in e.g Social Anthropology or other social sciences. An anthropologist explores daily village life Dennis Gaffin, an American anthropologist, spent a year studying the phenomenon of social control in an outlying Faeroese village. The resulting book is a surprisingly readable first-person narrative, not a turgid, theoretical work like so much academic writing. Gaffin's book is a description of how a small Faroese village functions - what people do for a living, their worldview, and the forces through which social norms are enforced. The topic of spatial order, to which the title refers, receives relatively little attention, with the exception that the author devotes a chapter to the issue of placenames. This book is principally about how a society pressures people to behave "properly" as defined in that culture.
