Among the many family-friendly sights and sounds on this tour are: a steam-powered ride on an 1852 passenger train, the story of one of America's first religious societies at the beautiful Ephrata Cloister, and a step back into our nation's agricultural past at the Landis Valley Farm Museum. A Brief History You can see the legacy of this wave of religious migration in Lancaster Country towns such as Strasburg, where beautiful stone and log homes, some dating back to the 18th century, line both sides of the street. In fact, Strasburg is reputed to possess more 18th-century homes than Virginia's Colonial Williamsburg. The tour also details the region's agricultural traditions at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, which includes a collection of Conestoga wagons, which were first built in Lancaster County and which proved critical to the development of the young nation known as the United States. These surprisingly huge wagons carried freight and farm produce in an era before the canals and railroads existed. In their heyday, thousands of wagons plied the country's rough roads. Even more critically, a modified version of the Conestoga wagon was employed by 19th-century pioneers heading west on the Oregon Trail on what became known as prairie schooners. Without these sturdy vehicles, the West would never have been settled.

Extractions: DIRECTIONS E xperience four centuries of Guilford history by attending Historic Guilford's "Twilight Tours." The six Guilford museums are serving food, beverages and entertainment authentic to the early days of Guilford along with tours of each museum. The "Twilight Tours" will take place on Saturday, August 2, 2003 from 5 PM to 9 PM. You may begin your tour at any of the museums. Cost for the tour is $10 for adults, children are Free. Tickets may be purchased at any of the museums. You are welcome to picnic at some of the museums. (No picnic facilities available at the other museums). For further information call (203) 457-0770. T he Henry Whitfield State Museum, located at 248 Old Whitfield Street, which has been closed due to State budget cuts, will be open for this special evening. You may take a self-guided tour of this 17th century house. Iced tea and cookies will be served. This is the oldest house in Connecticut and the oldest stone house in New England. Construction of the house for Minister Henry Whitfield began in 1639, when English Puritans first settled Guilford. The house, now a National Historic Landmark, features three floors of 17th through 19th century furnishings. This may be the last opportunity to visit this museum since it may remain closed indefinitely due to State budget cuts.

The Museum celebrates the 3,000-year agricultural story of New Mexico...from the first farmers in their rustic pithouses more than 1,200 years ago to the modern-day technology which is helping to make New Mexico a leader in the dairy industry. Located on Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces, within a half mile of Interstate 25, the Museum enjoys a dramatic view of the jagged peaks of the Organ Mountains to the east. The complex occupies a site with a living, working farm and ranch, coupled with a dramatic, Spanish hacienda-style building for display and exhibition. The new Museum's goal is ambitious...to welcome visitors who can remember agricultural roots as well as to set the stage for younger, urban generations who never had the opportunity to experience a rural homecoming.

Extractions: Kelmscott Changes Direction Kelmscott Rare Breeds Farm, a private non-profit foundation, closed its doors to the public in December 2003. Given our remote location in Lincolnville, Maine and the relative obscurity of rare breed conservation, our Board of Directors felt that the foundation would be unable to sustain itself financially in the future. Thanks to our many supporters, members, donors, visitors, staff, volunteers, and interns, Kelmscott enjoyed ten productive and exciting years. We are deeply grateful. Founded in 1994 by the Metcalfe family, Kelmscott Farm began as a working farm to conserve rare and endangered livestock breeds. Until January 2004, the farm was home to a variety of rare breeds including Cotswold Sheep, a Llama, a Poitou Ass, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Fell Pony, American Cream and Suffolk Punch Draft Horse, Kerry and White Park Cattle, various breeds of poultry, as well as Gloucester Old Spots Pigs. Educational programs for schools and the public as well as internships for high school and college students were developed to help inform the public of the importance of rare breeds conservation. Although Kelmscott has closed its non-profit doors, it is no way halting its commitment to rare breed conservation. Kelmscott Farm, Inc., a newly incorporated for-profit venture is picking up where Kelmscott Rare Breeds Foundation left off. Kelmscott Farm, Inc. will be exploring ways to make rare breed conservation economically viable.
