We derive several theoretical hypotheses on the impact of households’ management ability, land endowment, land quality and prices, transaction costs in the land market, rural credit and labour market constraints. We test the hypotheses combining a representative dataset on land rental activities of more than 1,400 Hungarian household farms with data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. We find that land rental markets reallocate land to households with better farm management capacities and less endowed with land. Households combine buying and renting of land to extend their farms. The continued domination of large farm organizations in some regions restricts household’s access to land. Organic agriculture is expanding in all OECD countries , and is one of the most rapidly developing market segments. It is no longer limited to farmers selling their produce at the farm-gate or through specialised stores, but has extended into the mainstream of the agri-food chain. It is seen by many as offering considerable benefits over other production systems, particularly with respect to sustainable development. Many countries have introduced policy measures to encourage and promote organic farming. But what exactly is the contribution of organic agriculture to sustainable development ? What issues should be addressed by policies? What are governments actually doing and how effective have their actions been? The recent OECD Workshop on Organic Agriculture examined these issues. It concluded that while organic agriculture is generally less stressful on the environment, good farm management is crucial. The economic performance of organic farms is mixed, with considerable variation in the yields achieved and the premiums received for products within and across OECD countries. This publication reveals that organic agriculture is disadvantaged by current agricultural support policies, and the proliferation of standards and labels has sometimes confused consumers and impeded trade. A key policy challenge is to ensure that both the positive and negative externalities of different agricultural production systems are taken into account.

The $28 million plant, just two months old, is being closely watched to see whether it might become a model for improving Illinois' declining pork industry. By operating its own plant and taking hogs only from the 200 members of its cooperative, Meadowbrook Farms brings farmers closer to consumers willing to pay premium prices for high-quality meat, said Art Lehman, president of the Illinois Pork Producers Association and a member of the cooperative. Farmers are paid according to the quality and quantity of meat their animals produce, not by total weight of a live hog, the traditional method. "We think we can do as good or better job at policing ourselves, raising the right kind of animal, feeding it right," Lehman said. "If there is a demand for a certain type of product, we think we can do that because there is nobody between us and the packing plant." A meatpacking plant wasn't necessarily what hog producers had in mind when they began searching for new markets after hog prices plummeted in the late 1990s, said James L. Burke, president and chief executive officer of the cooperative.

PEF expressed their concerns regarding decreased personal services. Management assured everyone that they are fully funded for those services. Our 400 acre farm is situated in the Manawatu - a region renowned for its rich soils and temperate (if windy) climate. The farm has had no chemicals or poisons on it for 18 years. Instead it is farmed in keeping with the laws of nature in an holistic manner. Our cows get to keep their tails and their horns, graze a natural herbal ley and produce just under 1 million litres of milk per year. Up until 6 months ago, half of this milk was sold to our dairy company, Kiwi Dairies, the remainder being diverted to our on farm dairy where it is turned into Biofarm Acidophilus Yoghurts and Pasteurised Wholemilk. The corridor, which stretches from southern Mexico to the border of Costa Rica and Panama, holds a treasure-trove of flora and fauna. It encompasses terrestrial and marine protected parks and reserves, along with privately owned wild lands. The Protected Areas and Environmentally Sound Products Component of the Central American Environmental Program ( PROARCA/APM ) is an ambitious, five-year effort started in 2001 to consolidate the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor by strengthening management of the area's parks, and by expanding both production of and market access for environmentally sound products and services. The Central American Commission for the Environment and Development (CCAD), whose members include the ministers of the environment in Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, directs the project, with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Rainforest Alliance are implementing the initiative. The Rainforest Alliance and WWF are working with producers and traders of certified, ecofriendly wood, coffee, bananas and seafood, as well as tourism operators.
