I have written in The Love Story about how Cheri and I decided that the world was too complicated, and that in defiance we would assume the roles of kids and their ability to just let go and have fun. Cheri decided to become the 4 year old... and I decided play the role of a rambunctious 8 year old. So... for two kids the leap from reality to the acquisition of a real, live, genuine tree house was at best a short one. When I had my first vision of the Barn - Tree House complex as described in The Barn , the tangled grove of big trees down stream from the old barn seemed an ideal location for the perch in the tree tops. By January 2000, the time had come to really get serious about our Tree House project. I plotted, schemed, and planned, and finally was able to establish boundaries for the first floor around the base of the large trees. I decided to make the Tree House two stories with a high deck on top, and Crows Nest accessible by ladder to another level nestled in the tree tops... a full four stories tall. The shape of the second level could not be determined until the bottom floor was completed because of the angle and lean of the trees higher up. Needless to say, the rooms of the Tree House are full of many angles as they conform to the will of the trees architecture.

At approximately 9:05 pm we spotted what appeared at first to be a small jetliner on approach to Steward airport (located ten miles away at Newburgh, NY). But after it passed low over us, making the obligatory sound of a jet aircraft, it suddenly made two steep banks or turns, and then seemed to dive at a high angle straight down towards the ground. My heart was in my throat as I fully expected to see a fireball rise up from behind the trees. But there was no explosion. There was nothing but deafening silence. Images 1 - 4 show the FT as it approached from the west (lower left), climbing in altitude and then leveling off above us (image 5). The times for each time exposure are given in sequence to the lower right. Pay close attention to how the lights change in intensity, character, number, and color. Note how an upwards "tail" occurs at the beginning of images 1-3. In the enlargements of the negatives below, the tails might at first be misinterpreted as camera jerks, or the movement of the camera as the shutter is opened. But that explanation does not account for the funnel shape of the main traces as the width of each trace narrows down. In addition, a tail or loop was produced in the middle of image 2, well after the shutter opened. Not only is there a loop, but a funnel afterwards, implying that this movement or feature was produced by the FT, and not by Cornet's camera.

A darkened figure wanders, timelessly it seems, looking, but never finding. The question is what is left unsaid, the events which brought us (in empathy with our protagonist) to this point of breakage. We grope in the darkness for understanding with only half a sentence to lead us on. A text which is a mystery, a moment, a feeling. Missing pieces float in those black spaces between scenes. The lacks which occur cause a more critical awareness of other elements which are often subjugated when viewing the conventional narrative systems of mainstream cinema. To that end, other methods are used to emphasize these other elements, not only to make us aware of them in this work, but perhaps to (re)consider them when viewing other, more mainstream films. For example, our comprehension of what we are seeing is split by and between two screens. This fractures our perceptions, and at once confronts us with the fact that we are not viewing a film, but an artwork. A break occurs in the way we usually view narrative, and we begin to recognize and experience the narrative which confronts us as non-linear. This is certainly a cause for anxiety as we experience our normal sense of time and space folding back on itself, but it also allows us room to maneuver and interpret.
