Extractions: Yet the earliest explorers of America were not English, Spanish, or French. The first European record of exploration in America is in a Scandinavian language. The Old Norse Vinland Saga recounts how the adventurous Leif Eriksson and a band of wandering Norsemen settled briefly somewhere on the northeast coast of America probably Nova Scotia, in Canada in the first decade of the 11th century, almost 400 years before the next recorded European discovery of the New World. The first known and sustained contact between the Americas and the rest of the world, however, began with the famous voyage of an Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, funded by the Spanish rulers Ferdinand and Isabella. Columbus's journal in his "Epistola," printed in 1493, recounts the trip's drama the terror of the men, who feared monsters and thought they might fall off the edge of the world; the near-mutiny; how Columbus faked the ships' logs so the men would not know how much farther they had travelled than anyone had gone before; and the first sighting of land as they neared America.

Extractions: The assembling of the Second Session of the Thirty-ninth Congress may very properly be made the occasion of a few earnest words on the already much-worn topic of reconstruction. Seldom has any legislative body been the subject of a solicitude more intense, or of aspirations more sincere and ardent. There are the best of reasons for this profound interest. Questions of vast moment, left undecided by the last session of Congress, must be manfully grappled with by this. No political skirmishing will avail. The occasion demands statesmanship. The arm of the Federal government is long, but it is far too short to protect the rights of individuals in the interior of distant States. They must have the power to protect themselves, or they will go unprotected, spite of all the laws the Federal government can put upon the national statute-book. One of the invaluable compensations of the late Rebellion is the highly instructive disclosure it made of the true source of danger to republican government. Whatever may be tolerated in monarchical and despotic governments, no republic is safe that tolerates a privileged class, or denies to any of its citizens equal rights and equal means to maintain them. What was theory before the war has been made fact by the war. There is cause to be thankful even for rebellion. It is an impressive teacher, though a stern and terrible one. In both characters it has come to us, and it was perhaps needed in both. It is an instructor never a day before its time, for it comes only when all other means of progress and enlightenment have failed. Whether the oppressed and despairing bondman, no longer able to repress his deep yearnings for manhood, or the tyrant, in his pride and impatience, takes the initiative, and strikes the blow for a firmer hold and a longer lease of oppression, the result is the same, society is instructed, or may be.

We sympathize with the victims and give thanks that it didn't happened to us. Our hearts are warmed by the stories of people helping one another, and by the stories of heroism. Extractions: Did you have a coach for a high school history teacher that knew no more about history than what was in the text book? And he couldn't answer any questions if the answer wasn't in the back of the teacher's edition of the text book? If all the history you know is what's in the high school text books, you've been left with a distorted view of alot of events in our country's history. You've probably also missed out on alot of history too. I like to look at history from "cause and affect" point of view. I know that sounds like the boring part of history, but that's how you really learn from history. Try studying the events that lead up to a certain event then look at the changes (good and bad) that came about because of that event. I like biographies too (though not as much). Most of the time we see great men in history as extraordinary men whose accomplishments are beyond the reach of us common men. Read their biographies, you'll come away with a different point of view. The internet has a wealth of resources for the history buff, covering subjects that you will not find in the text books. I've tried to put together a list of links covering various subjects in different periods in U.S. history. If you know of a good link that I have missed let me know. jpkilpat@hiwaay.net
