PREREQUISITE 45 credit hours including 9 hours of lower division history credit. Students with credit for HIST 447 under the same topic may not take HIST 450 for further credit. COURSE CONTENT To truly understand the American spirit, one must study the U.S. Civil War. The core of the country was shaken politically, socially, economically, and culturally. Antebellum America saw itself in increasingly sectional ways, as North and South drifted apart. The future of slavery in particular drove this heightened political, economic, and moral sectionalism. As war erupted, the soul of the Union hung in the balance, but tensions continued after the war through the era of Reconstruction, which some critics have called Americas unfinished revolution. In seminar format, this course will explore this most divisive and engaging period in American history. This course will be divided into three thematic sections: the first third of our class meetings will examine the growing sectional rift that led to disunion; the second third will concentrate on the war; and the last third will consider the process of reconstruction to 1877. Rather than highlighting the military history, our focus will be on the social and cultural history of the Civil War era.
