That notice did not actually run, but under a one-of-a-kind state law, Florida now requires women who don't know the birth father of their child to purchase similar ads in newspapers detailing their sexual histories before giving a baby up for adoption. The ads must run once a week for four weeks in a newspaper in the city where the child may have been conceived. The statute's backers say its goal is to provide birth fathers every opportunity to take responsibility for their children and prevent painful custody battles that can break up adoptive families. Critics of the adoption law, which took effect last October and applies only to private adoptions, say it invades privacy and brands women with a "scarlet letter" by making them divulge embarrassing intimate sexual details. Six women hoping to get the measure abolished are planning a lawsuit to be filed later this month in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mothers in prison often have sentences long enough that they run afoul of a 1997 federal adoption law and they lose all parental rightsno letters, no phone calls, no birthday cards allowed. (WOMENSENEWS)Dial up Michelle Spruill and her gentle voice recording tells you that "if you ever need a helping hand, you can find one at this number." On her other line she signs off, "God loves you and so do I." Knowing that Spruill reluctantly gave up two sons for adoption two years ago, a recent caller can't help wondering if the messages aren't somehow intended for their ears. In late 1996, Spruill began serving a five-year sentence in an Illinois prison for various property crimes that stemmed from drug abuse. One of her sons was placed in foster care. Another, born in prison, followed. But Spruill was determined to eventually reunite with her children, so she began rehabilitating herself, taking parenting-skills courses and undergoing substance-abuse treatment. Her efforts appeared to pay off. After two years, Spruill was released into a halfway home and she began the necessary court proceedings to get her kids back. There, however, she encountered the Adoption and Safe Families Act, a federal law passed in 1997 that requires states to move to sever a parent's right to a child after he or she has spent 15 months in foster care.

Their reasons for coming vary from the desire to distance themselves from an adoptive family to preferring parents who belong to the LDS Church. Critics suggest other motives in a small number of cases: attempts to avoid birth fathers or stricter laws requiring the fathers' consent in the home states. Utah adoptions require confirmation by a state judge. But whether the mothers' home state should be told and even required to approve of a pregnant woman's decision to deliver and place her child across state lines is the thorny subject of a lawsuit filed in 3rd District Court.

Once again, I have no acceptable answer for Anna. I go on to the good news. We live in a "good" county where the judges routinely grant second-parent adoptions and there is joy (and stuffed animals) in a court room as the judge grants the adoption. Anna was different from my other clients. Instead of accepting the status quo, she pressed me with questions. Finally, she asked "What do unmarried men do to establish their rights with a child." "That's called a paternity suit," I answered, and went on to explain that an unmarried man may file a lawsuit and present facts showing that he

Extractions: Family law is the term that is applied to the laws and rules developed regarding family relationships. Family law rules define not only the relationships between members of a family but also between a family and society as a whole. More than any other area of the law, family law reflects the values society shares regarding how people who are related should treat each other. Typically, family law attorneys assist people with the making and breaking of family relationships. Specific areas of representation usually include marriage and relationship planning, divorce, paternity, child custody and child support. Some family law attorneys also provide assistance in the area of adoption. When you are faced with an important life decision regarding a key family relationship, the advice and assistance of an experienced family law attorney often proves crucial to your understanding of the issues involved and your satisfaction with the ultimate outcome of the family-related concern you face. Marriage is a legal and business union as much as it is a romantic one. Although the limitations and requirements vary by state, basic marriage laws are similar. All states prohibit marriage to more than one person, marriage between the same sexes and marriage between close family members. Some of the more common limitations are:
