    Extractions: Self-consciousness in the “private” narration. The writing style used in journals, or personal confessions, is unique in the relationship it establishes between the author and the hypothetical reader; usually the assumption is that the author will be the only person ever to experience the writing in his or her private journal, but in both Sartre’s Nausea and Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground the journal is transformed into the public property of anyone who wants to read it. I believe this has the effect of somehow undermining or questioning the sincerity and purely private motive that we usually associate with the activity of writing in a journal; the main characters of these novels were in fact writing for an audience, whether or not they were directly aware of it, and perhaps this shows it is impossible to write entirely for oneself. Their voices are superficially revealing in tone, but in fact never convey any definite valuable insight. In choosing the supposedly private narrative genre of the journal, Sartre and Dostoevsky are addressing the existential problem of self-consciousness and the inevitable inaccuracy of self-reflection. I will provide examples of this from two similar passages from each of these novels.

Since the art of cartoon is mainly absurd, it is possible to talk of the connection between this form of art and the views of existentialist philosophers. The novels of Camus and Sartre , for example, are illustrations of their philosophical views. Equally, if we take the works of Kafka or Celine , who were not actually philosophers in the generally accepted sense, all their works carry a sense of existentialism. But is there any connection between the art of contemporary cartoon and philosophy? Is it possible to say that cartoon, as a genre, reflects any particular philosophical ideas? It is difficult to imagine a serious cartoonist who, with his critical way of looking at things, could worship a particular god and still be creative. You can imagine an exhibition of cartoons taking place almost anywhere; in a yard, on a submarine, in a public toilet, but not in a church. At various stages of their creative lives, most contemporary cartoonists look to the same themes: themes which fit within the parameters of the genre. A close inspection of the roots of these themes reveals that the world view of cartoonists from the second half of the twentieth century is, to a large degree, related to the philosophy of existentialism. Moreover, the very status of ideas in Russian philosophy mirrors Plato's vision of them as ontological entities, "laws", or ideal principlesas opposed to mere epistemological units. In discussing Russian philosophy, especially that of its Soviet period, we are bound to consider the practical fate of such Platonic conceptions as we explore the final outcome of an ideocratic utopia, wherein philosophy was designated to rule the republic.

    Extractions: The roots of existentialism began with Kierkegaard in the first half of the 19th century. He was critical of Hegel's philosophical system which analysed being (or existence) in an abstract and impersonal way. Kierkegaard was concerned with the individuals subjective experience of what it is to exist as a human being. For Kierkegaard the individual constantly has to choose what s/he is to become without recourse to the findings of science and philosophy. As we saw in the philosophy of god section Kierkegaard thought that the individual could chose to have a religious faith in the face of an absurd world The German phenomenologist Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) was influential in the development of methods that were later used by the existentialists. A phenomenologist is interested in things as they appear to consciousness, rather than things-in-themselves (See Kant). This emphasis on the individuals subjective consciousness was continued in the 20th century as existentialism developed. Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) studied under Husserl. Heidegger was interested in the "question of being". He thought that western philosophy had been over obsessed with the problem of knowledge. For Heidegger the individual as being-in-the-world was characterised by action and anxiety: knowing the world is not our primary way of being in the world. In his later works, Heidegger became more interested in the history of concepts in language. He regarded his investigations as an attempt to disclose or uncover the concealed nature of being. His most fundamental question was: why should there be being at all, when there could be nothing? Although Heidegger claimed he was not an "existentialist", his influence on Sartre and the existentialist movement is undeniable.
