The purpose of this competition is to promote a student-centered, transatlantic dimension to higher education and training in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. The Program will fund collaborative efforts in the form of consortia consisting of at least three academic institutions from member states of the European Union and from the United States. The funding period will be for up to three years. The EC-US Program fosters student exchange within the context of multilateral curricular development. Students benefit from having an added "international" curriculum and cultural dimension to their studies through a combination of curricular innovation and study abroad.

Before 1 January 1999, most children's playground equipment was supplied either to BS 5696, or to the German equivalent standard DIN 7926, or to other national standards. A new European standard BS EN 1176 Playground equipment has now replaced BS 5696 and another new standard BS EN 1177 Impact absorbing playground surfacing - safety requirements and test methods has replaced much of BS 7188. You should use these two new standards in conjunction with each other rather than in isolation. Parts of the amended standard BS 7188 Methods of test for impact absorbing playground surfaces remain to provide additional guidance on surfacing.

Extractions: Russian Area Specialist The Library of Congress currently holds about 700,000 physical volumes (books, sets, continuations, and bound periodicals) in Russian, and approximately the same number of volumes in other languages of the former USSR and volumes in Western languages about Russia and the former Soviet Union. There are also significant collections of other non-book print materials (music scores, newspapers, microforms and cartographic materials) and non-print materials (sound recordings, motion pictures, manuscripts, photographs, and posters), although statistics on these categories of holdings are less readily available. LC's Russian collection is by far the largest and most comprehensive outside Russia itself, even though by policy current collecting over the past fifty years was and remains highly selective, designed to bring in only the most useful and scholarly publications from and about Russia. Moreover, because of decades of communist censorship, political manipulation, appallingly poor storage conditions, and neglect of libraries in Russia, and because of LC's automation and preservation programs and the number of staff members involved in building, servicing, and interpreting the Russian collections, it is highly likely that the Library of Congress is the best single repository on earth in which to conduct research on Russia using published sources.

Nevertheless, it was not until the end of World War II that development of a world- class collection of Soviet and East European (and hence, Polish) research materials became a priority of the Library of Congress. A quantitative ranking indicates the strengths of the Polish collection lie in history, belles lettres, biography, bibliography, art and architecture, and the physical sciences. The Library does not acquire in the fields of clinical medicine and agriculture. Scholarly works of a generic nature that do not contribute substantively to the body of human knowledge as a rule also are not collected. Thus, most textbooks and works on scientific phenomena that do not pertain uniquely to Poland do not fall within the acquisition profile of the Library.

In recent days, we're beginning to see some signs of progress. The situation in Ramallah has been resolved nonviolently. We're working for peace in Bethlehem. I'm encouraged by my meeting with Crown Prince Abdallah, and the steps he has taken to advance his vision of peace. Next week I will meet with Prime Minister Sharon and King Abdullah of Jordan to discuss next steps on the road ahead.

It is fitting therefore that in 2003, the European Year of Disabled People, the Government, working with others, has continued to make further major strides towards that goal. These initiatives complement the host of other activities that have taken place across the whole of the UK, the 170 projects that were funded, but also the many independent activities that were organized by large and small, public, private and voluntary sector organisations. This concerted effort has gone a long way to helping to raise awareness of disability issues and highlighting the skills and talents of disabled people.
