Extractions: W riting is a craft that may be done well or may be done poorly. Language can be dramatic or beautiful or boring or powerful or playful. There is a sense in which philosophical writing is no different. Many of the classic texts in Philosophy are carefully framed pieces of prose where the author is attempting to achieve a result that is aesthetically pleasing within an identifiable literary style. Your first forays into philosophy, however, are not aimed at the craft of writing. The goals of this class are oriented toward the conceptual or analytical part of philosophy. We are interested primarily in your ability to think honestly and critically about philosophical questions. This is not to say that there is no interest in how you write. Rather, the writing aesthetic you should cultivate in this class is careful, simple, clear and direct. The tutorial that follows is designed to explore one way of making sure that your writing does not obfuscate your philosophical views. Extractions: Teaching Theory of Knowledge In "Epistemology Naturalized" (1968), Quine said, "The old epistemology aspired to contain, in a sense, natural science; it would construct it somehow from sense data. Epistemology in its new setting, conversely, is contained in natural science, as a chapter of psychology." A growing number of philosophers and other theorists of knowledge have turned away from the positivistic conception of epistemology as rational reconstruction and justification of our knowledge, and have turned to psychology, cognitive science, evolutionary theory, history of science and other areas as sources for answering the questions about the nature and acquisition of knowledge. Naturalistic epistemology rejects a purely a priori or "arm-chair" view of the field, seeing it instead as a branch of empirical science, or at least interdependent with the sciences. In a slightly different vein, naturalism can be understood as a philosophy that focuses on facts as opposed to norms or values. This can lead to an opposition between naturalistic and normative epistemology. For purposes of this unit, however, even an evaluative brand of epistemology is counted as naturalistic if it enlists the sciences, e.g., the cognitive science in the enterprise (as in Alvin Goldman's "epistemics"). Epistemology need not be replaced by the sciences, but may draw on them to construct epistemic rules or make epistemic judgments. Extractions: Traditional Philosophy at Colorado State University T he Department of Philosophy at Colorado State University is guided by the principle that a Master of Arts in Philosophy requires training in traditional theoretical areas of philosophy. Consequently, all graduate students in their first year are required to take a seminar devoted to the in-depth study of a major text in the history of philosophy (PL500) and a seminar devoted to contemporary meta-ethics (PL547). Also, incoming students who do not have sufficient preparation in logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics or the history of philosophy will be required to take courses in these areas. Students will be notified when they are accepted what remedial courses they need to take. I n addition to PL500 and PL547, we offer the following seminars in traditional areas: PL525: Seminar in Epistemology, PL527: Seminar in Philosophy of Science, PL555: Philosophical Models of Nature, and PL 666: Science and Ethics. We have also offer special topics seminars, and topics have included Philosophy of Technology, Philosophy of Logic, Philosophy of Religion, Plato, Hume, Kant and Wittgenstein. Also, students can design independent studies in their areas of interest. A bout half of our students work in traditional areas of philosophy and these students typically plan to go on to PhD programs.
