Extractions: The National Clearinghouse for Worker Safety and Health Training is a national resource for members of the worker education and training community. It targets workers and trainers who are involved in the handling of hazardous waste or in responding to emergency releases of hazardous materials and terrorist actions. Visitors to our website are also provided with easy, up-to-date links to relevant hazmat-related government news and grants information, as well as an online catalog of training curricula produced by NIEHS WETP awardees and available to the public. The NIEHS Worker Education and Training Program has generated several documents that have had a major impact on the training of workers to safely perform hazardous waste cleanup and emergency response. We have highlighted them on their own separate page for your convenience. Click here.
Institute Of Soil, Water And Evironmental Sciences The Institute of Soil, Water environmental Sciences is one of seven research institutes comprising the Agricultural Research Organization of Israel. http://www.agri.gov.il/SoilScience.html
Extractions: The research activities of the Institute are well represented in the many publications of the staff in local and international journals dedicated to the various aspects of soil, water, plants and the environment. The Institute contributes to the national and international information exchange through visits of its staff members to other countries and by hosting visits of personnel from foreign institutions. Participation in and presentation of papers at international meetings forms another important information channel. The academic staff of the Institute maintains close contact with the Ministry of Agriculture's Agricultural Extension Service and with local farmers to whom our doors are always open. Lectures, special publications, meetings and on-site visits help to maintain this contact on a daily basis.

Extractions: Research Library: People: Water Water Water scarcity may be the most underappreciated global environmental challenge of our time. In the Middle East, China, India, and the United States, groundwater is being pumped faster than it is being replenished, and rivers such as the Colorado and Yellow River no longer reach the sea year round. Over the next quarter century, the number of people in countries unable to meet their domestic, industrial, and agricultural water needs is expected to balloon substantially. Worldwatch research on water focuses on practical policies to ensure more efficient use and equitable access to water, to minimize international and intersectoral conflict over this vital resource, and to avoid groundwater contamination. Mangrove forests are located along the tropical coasts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Because these spider and snake infested "swamps" covered perfectly good beaches, mangrove forests in the United States were seen as a nuisance and often removed. However, the calm waters in mangrove forests provide necessary nursery areas for many fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. The tree's elaborate root systems also protect the beaches from erosion. Mangrove forests develop in areas where high energy waves are absent and sediments accumulate. Tidal flooding largely influences the structure and appearance of mangrove forests. Although most mangrove forests are found submerged in water along the coastline, they can extend to the flood plain's outer limits which are often dry and only occasionally flooded when the water reaches its highest point. Mangroves are adapted for the salty conditions and frequent flooding in the ocean's tidal range and have three ways of dealing with excessive salt. Some plants simply filter it out in the roots before the salt goes into the plant. Others quickly excrete the salt through salt-glands on the leaves. In this case, salt crystals can be seen on the plant's leaves. Some plants concentrate the salt in the bark of the tree or excrete it in older leaves. Then, when these leaves fall off the salt is disposed of. All mangrove tree

Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR of the National Science and Technology Council) National Institutes of Health Search Updated 8 February, 2004 The Division of Extramural Research and Training of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is responsible for the Institute's scientific, fiscal, and administrative management of grant-supported research and training programs. These programs are focused on understanding direct relationships between human exposures to environmental agents and potential effects on health. Research is supported at universities, medical centers, research institutions, and other research organizations throughout the U.S. and the world. The Chemical Exposures and Molecular Biology Branch administers research programs in molecular biology; carcinogenesis; biomarkers of chemical exposures and doses, individual susceptibility, and effects; and environmental epidemiology. The Organ and Systems Toxicology Branch supports mechanistic-based research focused on examining non-cancer endpoints of exposures to environmental toxicants. Research supported is concentrated on the molecular mechanisms by which environmental factors disrupt cellular function within target tissues and lead to human health problems. Much of the research involves studies at the intracellular and genetic levels; however, population-based research projects are also supported to identify environmental substances that cause or exacerbate human health problems.

Extractions: Role of Agriculture in Bangladesh Economy Basic Information of Agriculture in Bangladesh Organogram of the Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture Extension System in Bangladesh ... Agriculture Development Strategy of the Ministry Role of Agriculture in Bangladesh Economy The economy of Bangladesh is primarily dependent on agriculture. About 84 percent of the total population live in rural areas and are directly or indirectly engaged in a wide range of agricultural activities. The agriculture sector plays a very important role in the economy of the country accounting for 31.6 percent of total GDP in 1997-98 at constant (1984-85) prices. The agriculture sector comprises crops, forests, fisheries and livestock. Of the agricultural GDP, the crop sub-sector contributes 71 per cent, forest 10 per cent, fisheries 10 percent and livestock 9 per cent. The sector generates 63.2% percent of total national employment, of which crop sectors share is nearly 55 %. Agricultural exports of primary products constituted 10.4% of total exports of the country in 1997-98. In the past decade, the agriculture sector contributed about three percent per annum to the annual economic growth rate. The agriculture sector is the single largest contributor to income and employment generation and a vital element in the countrys challenge to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, reduce rural poverty and foster sustainable economic development. The Government has therefore accorded highest priority to this sector to enable the country to meet these challenges and to make this sectorcommercially profitable.

SAM, ASc; BS; MS. Environmental Scientist/Environmental Planner Chairman, AERCG. 1.1. Introduction: This paper is in response to the numerous supportive and positive response we have received in regards to the article on the AFRICAN ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND CONSULTING GROUP (AERCG) in the December edition of the West African Magazine. This paper response to the numerous inquires AERCG has received from all over the world, provides a broad mission statement for AERCG and a brief overview of the environmental condition and relevant socio-economic and political issues. The present environmental conditions and the dynamics of environmental issues in Africa have lead to the creation of the AERCG. The AERCG is a consortium of native African environmental professionals residing in the United States. The group encomposes individual principals with a variety of expertise in the fields of environmental and human health issues (such as water quality, air quality, land degradation, water resources, waste management, public health and sanitation, environmental planning, protection of sensitive ecosystem, population impact, etc.) that confront the continent of Africa. AERCG is a non-profit/non-governmental organization registered in the United States and plans to register as such in the international community including Africa. The principals of the group have contributed to various technology transfer programs to developing countries.
