Mangrove forests are located along the tropical coasts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Because these spider and snake infested "swamps" covered perfectly good beaches, mangrove forests in the United States were seen as a nuisance and often removed. However, the calm waters in mangrove forests provide necessary nursery areas for many fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. The tree's elaborate root systems also protect the beaches from erosion. Mangrove forests develop in areas where high energy waves are absent and sediments accumulate. Tidal flooding largely influences the structure and appearance of mangrove forests. Although most mangrove forests are found submerged in water along the coastline, they can extend to the flood plain's outer limits which are often dry and only occasionally flooded when the water reaches its highest point. Mangroves are adapted for the salty conditions and frequent flooding in the ocean's tidal range and have three ways of dealing with excessive salt. Some plants simply filter it out in the roots before the salt goes into the plant. Others quickly excrete the salt through salt-glands on the leaves. In this case, salt crystals can be seen on the plant's leaves. Some plants concentrate the salt in the bark of the tree or excrete it in older leaves. These programs are focused on understanding direct relationships between human exposures to environmental agents and potential effects on health. Research is supported at universities, medical centers, research institutions, and other research organizations throughout the U.S. and the world. The Chemical Exposures and Molecular Biology Branch administers research programs in molecular biology; carcinogenesis; biomarkers of chemical exposures and doses, individual susceptibility, and effects; and environmental epidemiology. The Organ and Systems Toxicology Branch supports mechanistic-based research focused on examining non-cancer endpoints of exposures to environmental toxicants. Research supported is concentrated on the molecular mechanisms by which environmental factors disrupt cellular function within target tissues and lead to human health problems. Much of the research involves studies at the intracellular and genetic levels; however, population-based research projects are also supported to identify environmental substances that cause or exacerbate human health problems.

About 84 percent of the total population live in rural areas and are directly or indirectly engaged in a wide range of agricultural activities. The agriculture sector plays a very important role in the economy of the country accounting for 31.6 percent of total GDP in 1997-98 at constant (1984-85) prices. The agriculture sector comprises crops, forests, fisheries and livestock. Of the agricultural GDP, the crop sub-sector contributes 71 per cent, forest 10 per cent, fisheries 10 percent and livestock 9 per cent. The sector generates 63.2% percent of total national employment, of which crop sectors share is nearly 55 %. Agricultural exports of primary products constituted 10.4% of total exports of the country in 1997-98. In the past decade, the agriculture sector contributed about three percent per annum to the annual economic growth rate. The agriculture sector is the single largest contributor to income and employment generation and a vital element in the countrys challenge to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, reduce rural poverty and foster sustainable economic development. The Government has therefore accorded highest priority to this sector to enable the country to meet these challenges and to make this sectorcommercially profitable.

The group encomposes individual principals with a variety of expertise in the fields of environmental and human health issues (such as water quality, air quality, land degradation, water resources, waste management, public health and sanitation, environmental planning, protection of sensitive ecosystem, population impact, etc.) that confront the continent of Africa. AERCG is a non-profit/non-governmental organization registered in the United States and plans to register as such in the international community including Africa. The principals of the group have contributed to various technology transfer programs to developing countries.
