Extractions: CIESIN Thematic Guides *DRAFT* Welcome to the CIESIN Thematic Guide on Human Dimensions Research Programs. In recent years the international scientific community has mobilized to improve understanding of global environmental processes. Governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations are developing research programs and working groups to answer the fundamental question, "How does the earth system work?" The human dimensions, or ways that people contribute to and are impacted by global environmental change, are becoming an increasingly important element of major research efforts. Miller and Jacobson (1992) discuss the history, structure, and challenges of this area in "Research on the Human Components of Global Change." Stern, Young, and Druckman (1992) present the United States National Research Council's perspectives and recommendations for U.S. research in Global Environmental Change: Exploring the Human Dimensions . The introduction of the book is available here.

Extractions: Oceans and Seas The oceans cover three quarters of the worlds surface, but we have only just begun to comprehend the full significance of their ability to sustain both humans and the natural environment. It is increasingly clear that the marine environment plays a central role in supporting sustainable development, especially once we begin to identify the many areas which interact with the oceans and seas. This complex mix of coastal and marine interaction calls for a substantial increase in policies, resources and initiatives in order to better understand and enhance these systems. This paper concentrates principally on two key areas: The paper seeks to chart current approaches for sustainably protecting and managing Briefing paper on Oceans and Seas PDF format Briefing paper on Oceans and Seas - Rich text format Other Useful Resources... Extractions: The Environmental Campaign Committee has launched the "Waste Recycling Scheme in Universities" in 1999. 9 institutes have participated in the scheme. Till now, the scheme has extended to 33 institutes, including universities, institutes of Vocational Training Council and Construction Industry Training Authority. The scheme aims at helping the staff and students of the participating institutes to acquire more knowledge on waste reduction and recycling; and to raise their awareness on the imperative need to conserve our environment. In the past 3 years, the ECC and the EPD have invited green groups to provide training workshops to participating institutes. These workshops include talks, exhibitions, video shows, discussion sessions and quizzes. Besides, the ECC has produced information booklets and CD-Roms to participating institutes as reference in organizing nvironmental campaigns and activities. They contain environmental issues in Hong Kong and the strategies in organizing environmental activities in campuses.
