Extractions: Tips on Advising and Advisors in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Every CALS student has an advisor. This is an opportunity for you to get to know a faculty member and get good advice on a major and carrer that you can pursue and tips on planning your program of coursework. Many students build a strong mentoring relationship with their advisor over the years, and their advisor serves as a very important reference for graduate or professional school or for their first step in a career. So your advisor can be helpful to you from your first semester, through your undergraduate career and beyond. Taking best advantage or the CALS advising program is one way to maximize the value of your education. When should I see my advisor? You need to meet with your advisor at least once each semester to review your academic progress, chat about career goals and opportunities, the nature of the field, how your semester is going, and select courses for the next semester. Advisors are busy, so will they be willing to meet with me?

Extractions: Crossing Bridges Program Crossing Bridges is a rare and innovative partnership between Sitka School District, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, and Sheldon Jackson College. Our aim is to improve academic performance, increase students feeling of connectedness to their respective schools, increase family participation, and develop a relationship between SSD, MEHS, and SJC that is cooperative, long lasting, and mutually beneficial. The Crossing Bridges tutoring program retains the "Power Hour" and "Homework Helper" names of predecessor programs and includes supervision from two full time VISTA volunteers. We hire and train qualified high school students from Sitka High School, Pacific High School, and Mt. Edgecumbe High School to tutor students in Baranof and Keet Gooshi Heen elementary schools, Blatchley Middle School, and the Ventures program. Our high school tutors meet weekly for activities and games and periodically for wilderness retreats that promote communication skills, trust, leadership development, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Our elementary tutees receive one-on-one help from older students in a mentoring relationship that can feel like having big brothers and sisters. We hope that some of our tutors will choose to advance through college and become teachers, and we trust that the statewide connections they make with each other will last into adulthood.
