    Extractions: Systematic Entomology Laboratory, General Correspondence, 1910-1973 Introduction Historical Note Descriptive Entry INTRODUCTION This correspondence (Record Unit 7309) was transferred to the Archives by the Insect Identification and Beneficial Insect Introduction Institute, United States Department of Agriculture, in 1980. Prior to its transfer to the Archives, the file was culled and certain correspondence was removed. Therefore, this guide provides access to only a fragment of the original file. The correspondence occupies 6.5 linear meters of shelf space. HISTORICAL NOTE The Systematic Entomology Laboratory (SEL), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is responsible for the identification of insect specimens. Its work provides basic support for biological control projects, environmental studies, and research activities of federal and state agencies and other organizations. SEL scientists are also active in research focused upon insect groups of economic importance to American agriculture. SEL maintains offices and laboratories at the National Museum of Natural History and at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland. DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY This collection contains the official correspondence of the Systematic Entomology Laboratory, USDA, and its predecessors, 1925 to 1973. The correspondence, which is both incoming and outgoing, mostly concerns the identification of specimens sent to the USDA for determination. Smaller amounts of correspondence document research projects of USDA taxonomists; the preparation of scientific publications; field work; and professional activities. Correspondents include domestic and foreign entomologists, government scientists, university professors, and USDA staff. Outgoing correspondence is usually signed by the USDA Entomologist in charge of the Division. Correspondence pre-dating 1925 primarily documents the professional career of Sievert Allen Rohwer and includes letters relating to his duties as Custodian of Hymenoptera, United States National Museum.

    Extractions: Program Information The University of Manitoba has the only Entomology Department in Canada. The department has strong links with agricultural and environmental research organizations in Winnipeg and across Canada, and is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive graduate training in entomological research. The department offers both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. In both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, students must achieve a high standard in a research project and in a thesis reporting their results. Students must also take some course work, including a course intended to develop written and oral communications skills, to promote critical thinking and to provide exposure to diverse fields of entomology and related sciences. Graduates of the Ph.D. from the Department of Entomology occupy academic positions in a number of universities in Canada and elsewhere, others occupy senior scientist positions with Agriculture Canada, Environment Canada, or other government research and regulatory agencies. Graduates of the M.Sc. program have proceeded to Ph.D. programs elsewhere, while others have entered the workforce following their M.Sc. degree. A high proportion of insect extension specialists in provincial governments in western Canada are graduates of the department's M.Sc. program. Other recent graduates have positions as forest and prairie management ecologists, careers in agribusiness, producer organizations or pesticide companies, or technical positions in research organizations.

The first group (AA 338/1/1/1 to AA 338/1/28) relates to observations and data recorded by Tindale in the field whilst on expedition. The second group (AA 338/1/29 to AA 338/1/44) comprises notes and data compiled on short trips or visits and related papers. Finally the third group (AA 338/1/45 to AA 338/1/53/14) comprises desk journals that predominantly relate to the study of anthropological collections overseas and additional notes recorded later in his life on both entomology and anthropology. Together the journals form the core series of Tindale's life work. The other series are records created to supplement and or support the journals such as maps and photographs. These have been carefully cross-referenced by Tindale. Tindale developed his record-keeping skills on instruction from one of his peers, Sir Baldwin Spencer. Spencer taught Tindale to enter key data of the day each night prior to retiring. Tindale learned to record data on the right hand page leaving the left hand page blank for annotations, additions, insertion of photographs, pasting of correspondence and newspaper clippings and any other related or supported documentation. Spencer also imparted the wisdom of experience to bind the journal once it had reached approximately 500 pages with an index. It was also useful to insert a title page so that the volume could be quoted as a manuscript book in the future.
