Extractions: The Earth's crust, on which we live and depend, is in large part the product of millions of once-active volcanoes and tremendous volumes of magma that did not erupt but instead cooled below the surface. Such persistent and widespread volcanism has resulted in many valuable natural resources throughout the world. ... Groundwater heated by large, still-hot magma bodies can be tapped for geothermal energy. Excerpt from: Brantley, 1994, Volcanoes of the United States, USGS General Interest Publication The internal heat associated with young volcanic systems has been harnessed to produce geothermal energy. For example, the electrical energy generated from The Geysers geothermal field in northern California can meet the present power consumption of the city of San Francisco. Excerpt from: Tilling, 1985, Volcanoes: USGS General Interest Publication Geothermal energy can be harnessed from the Earth's natural heat associated with active volcanoes or geologically young inactive volcanoes still giving off heat at depth.

Preprinted from the Chapter 9 of the 1997 ARRL Handbook for Radio Amateurs All life on Earth has adapted to survive in an environment of weak, natural low-frequency electromagnetic fields (in addition to the Earth's static geomagnetic field). Natural low-frequency EM fields come from two main sources: the sun, and thunderstorm activity. But in the last 100 years, man-made fields at much higher intensities and with a very different spectral distribution have altered this natural EM background in ways that are not yet fully understood. Much more research is needed to assess the biological effects of EMR.

Extractions: Abstract 12 % of the total EU energy consumption shall by 2010 be covered by renewable energy sources. This is the objective that the Community agreed on in its white book on "renewable energies ". At the same time, a European-wide action plan has been set up. In order to achieve these goals, local communities do need to actively contribute to this. The City of Aberdeen - member of Energie-Cités - is therefore active in research and promotion of these energy sources. An extensive feasibility study initiated by the Regional City Council has been developed under the Altener programme. Extractions: Abstract Besançon has developed a strong environmental reputation. Located in a remarkable natural setting, Besançon initiated a number of actions, often innovative ones, in the field of urban transport, air quality, noise abatement, tree management etc. All are long term actions that were initiated in the 1980s or even before. The Municipality received and continues to receive prestigious awards and honorary mentions. In the 1970s, the Municipality of Besançon became proactive in local energy conservation through a series of actions in wide-ranging areas: public transport, heat network with service galleries, public buildings, biogas, waste-to-energy schemes, cogeneration, etc. In 1983 a Deputy Mayor was appointed to take charge of energy conservation and environmental issues. This political commitment, together with the motivation of the technical team and the support of ADEME, the French Energy Agency explain the results achieved. Besançon's commitment towards sustainable energy - although the term was not in use at that time - is at the origin of the creation in 1990 of a first network aimed to encourage exchanges of experience between a small group of European municipalities. This network later became Energie-Cités and it is quite naturally in Besançon that the association set up its head office some ten years ago, thus providing its members with a place when they can get information, benefit from various services, and exchange experience.

Contact Us The Act ( EEOICPA ) established a compensation program for individuals who, over the past 50 years, have performed duties uniquely related to the nuclear weapons production and testing programs at DOE and its predecessor agencies. OCAS will reconstruct radiation doses by evaluating all appropriate data relevant to which an individual worker or group of workers have been exposed, particularly when radiation monitoring data are unavailable, incomplete, or of poor quality. The data used for the dose reconstructions will be obtained through requests sent to DOE and data search and capture efforts. OCAS along with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), the contractor hired to support NIOSH's responsibilities under the EEOICPA, have been involved in data search and capture efforts. These efforts are being conducted at various DOE sites and federal and private records storage locations throughout the United States to retrieve radiation monitoring data needed to conduct dose reconstructions. Listed below are the data search and capture efforts for DOE sites. When available, we have included the sites for which information was recovered. The most recent efforts are at the top of the list:
