Extractions: Engineering Home ESAC is a focal point for student activities in the engineering school. It is active in organizing events, in enhancing student life, in benefiting engineering students, and acting as a means of communication between students, student groups, and the administration. In the past year, ESAC has planned several events to benefit the Penn engineering community. ESAC is the umbrella organization for all engineering clubs. Monthly meetings are held with student leaders from each engineering organization. The meetings provide a way for engineering clubs to support one another and to create community within SEAS. Most departments are affiliated with a national professional organization. Each of these organizations has a chapter at Penn, which becomes a club for undergraduate students. Typically, these clubs will organize alumni speakers, plant tours, recreational events and social events. Gore Reports Farmland Conversion Doubles Vice President Al Gore has released new figures showing that the conversion of farmland and other open space to development more than doubled in recent years. The Vice President said the Administration will seek a significant increase in funding for voluntary programs to preserve farms threatened by sprawl. The new figures, contained in the USDA's 1997 National Resources Inventory, show that nationally nearly 16 million acres of forest, cropland, and open space were converted to urban and other uses from 1992 to 1997. States most greatly affected include California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. States Ineffective In Cutting Sprawl In too many states, efforts to curb sprawl have been ineffective and spending on new roads has continued at high levels, according to a new report recently released by the Sierra Club.
