Extractions: Electric and Hybrid Vehicles 1998 EVCO Electrathon - Official Web Page The 1998 EVCO Electrathon, where high school teams will match their design and construction skills and months of effort against teams from other schools where it counts - on the track! The objective of the Electrathon contest is to travel as far as possible in one-hour in a single-seater vehicle using only the energy available from approximately 30 kilograms of lead-acid batteries. The vehicles must comply with a set of rules (e.g. 3 or more wheels, safety devices). Creativity in the design and construction of the vehicles is encouraged. The Electrathon cars are much like the solar cars that take part of international competitions, except that they do not have the (expensive) solar panels, allowing them to be constructed on limited budgets. Like larger on-road electric cars, the Electrathon cars produce no air pollution in operation, and can be virtually silent. Design/Build Workshops Global Light and Power offers workshops developed for use in schools, clubs, neighborhood groups, and social organizations who want to quickly learn basic skills in actual construction of Electric Vehicle and Alternative Energy systems. All workshops consist of actually building a complete system which the sponsor keeps for their own use. Workshop costs include all components used in the demonstration system built. After an introductory review of the elements of the system, workshop participants actually perform the system construction under supervision. Workshops offered: Electrathon Competition Engineering; Electric Vehicle Conversions; Basic Home Power Systems; and Water Pumping With Solar Electric.

Extractions: Français Search BACKGROUNDER Electric Vehicle Project - Montréal 2000 As most large cities, Montréal has to contend with urban smog caused by nitrogen-oxide (Nox) and volatile-organic-compound (VOC) emissions and this despite having some of the most severe regulations against air pollution. In Quebec, road transportation is responsible for about 70% of Nox emissions, over 35% of VOC emissions and 40% of greenhouse-gas emissions. It is also responsible for 60% of carbon-monoxide (CO) emissions. The goal of the Electric Vehicle Project - Montréal 2000 is to prove that it is possible to adopt a gasoline-replacement solution that would not add to the problem of greenhouse-gas emissions because electric energy used to recharge batteries is produced by hydroelectricity. The use of these vehicles will help reduce carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 3.8 tons per year per vehicle. The other goal of this project is to demonstrate in real conditions that battery-charged electric vehicles, with an adequate infrastructure in place, are a technical, cost-effective solution for commercial and institutional vehicle fleets operating in an urban environment. The project requires the commitment of many sponsors, and this at various levels. The promoters of the Electric Vehicle Project - Montréal 2000 are Hydro-Québec, the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec, Norvik Traction and the Centre dexpérimentation des véhicules électriques du Québec (CEVÉQ).
