Over a span of 20 years, granite and limestone rocks were cut from quarries nearby and floated down the Nile to the site, and the base was cleared down to the bedrock and construction was to begin. There are a few theories concerning how the pyramids were actually built. One is that there was a spiral ramp that went around the pyramid as it increased in size. This ramp would have been greased with water and mud to allow the workers to pull or push massive stones which may have been place on long wooden sledges. Another theory is that the stones were put in place by using a lever and pulley system. The men that worked on the pyramids are not believed to be Egyptian slaves. They actually were farmers that were hired (against their will) to work for the Pharaoh during the flood season. The Nile floods onto the land through the months of July to October, irrigating the lands, but rendering the farmers without anything to do. These workers were not horribly treated either. Ancient records show that they were paid workers that received decent wages, holidays off, and were only allowed (under regulation) to work a maximum amount of hours per day. A smaller team of men probably remained working on the pyramid year round, and then the team increased in size during the flood season.

Tombs of early Egyptian kings were bench-shaped mounds called mastabas. Around 2780 B.C., King Djoser's architect, Imhotep, built the first pyramid by placing six mastabas, each smaller than the one beneath, in a stack to form a pyramid rising in steps. This Step Pyramid stands on the west bank of the Nile River at Sakkara near Memphis. Like later pyramids, it contains various rooms and passages, including the burial chamber of the king. The transition from the Step Pyramid to a true, smooth-sided pyramid took placed during the reign of King Snefru, founder of the Fourth Dynasty (2680-2560 B.C.). At Medum, a step pyramid was built, then filled in with stone, and covered with a limestone casing. Nearby at Bahshur, construction was begun on a pyramid apparently planned to have smooth sides. About halfway up, however, the angle of incline decreases from over 5l degrees to about 43 degrees, and the sides rise less steeply, causing it to be known as the Bent Pyramid.
