Our region of focus will be on the Oriente, literally, the East, which lays east of the Andes mountains and include both the Upper and Lower Amazon Basins. The stench of scorched land fills the air, mingling with the smell of exhaust from the many diesel-burning buses that flood the streets of the Capitol City. Quito is a city that blends the rich traditions of it's European and Indian architecture, culture and relaxed way of life, with a constant striving to break into the modern age of business and commerce. It is a city characterized by old churches next to glass office towers, modern banks with crumbling sidewalks, and rich mixture of people living by the old traditions and others firmly entrenched in the new world. Quito represents a country in the midst of change, attempting to preserve the old, yet take advantage of the new. These diverse habitats create a country that offers much to the visiting tourist. There are very high active volcanoes to climb, such as Mount Cotopaxi, sitting at almost 20,000 feet. There are lush tropical rainforests, some virgin and some not, providing adventures into a vanishing lifestyle and ecosphere. There is a long coastline providing small fishing villages, ecoresorts, untouched beaches, and the Galapagos Islands.

Mainland Ecuador has three regions. The western coastal lowlands, central highlands and eastern Amazonian lowlands. Western pacific lowlands The western coastal lowlands used to be heavily forested, but most of the natural vegetation is now destroyed for agriculture and the mangroves have been hacked and replaced with shrimp ponds. This region is made up of fertile plains, rolling hills, and sedimentary basins traversed by a plethora of rivers that rush from the heights of the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. The nations most important and beautiful rivers can be seen here. The western provinces of Los Rios, Manabi and El Oro are the most intensively farmed in Ecuador. The Andean mountain Range runs from north to south, splitting the country into the western coastal lowlands and the eastern jungles and rainforests of the upper Amazonian basin. Chimborazo is the highest peak of the Andean mountains, which is composed of two volcanic mountain ranges, about 400 km long, with a valley nestled between. The valley houses Quito, the capital of Ecuador. This is the region with the highest population density in the country.

Extractions: The Coastal Lowlands Guayaquil Located at the mouth of the Guayas River, this coastal city has always been the largest and most liberal-minded in Ecuador. Its fiercely independent and progressive populace has at times rebelled against the government in Quito. Today, it is a city of 2 million, and some historians explain that the reason Guayaquil is not the nation's capital is because the Spanish found Quito easier to control. Guayaquil's history of trading dates back thousands of years, and its markets are still a big attraction. People come from all over Ecuador to hawk their goods here, and bargains abound. The Central Highlands The most dramatic geographical feature of Ecuador is its central highlands. Here, a soaring stretch of the Andes splits into two local ranges, demarcating a magnificent central valley. The German explorer Humbolt aptly dubbed this valley the Avenue of the Volcanoes, for along it range most of Ecuador's 51 volcanic peaks, 21 of which are presently active. Many wear snowy crowns all year round. The highest peak is Chimborazo, rising 6,310 meters. At the northern end of the valley is Ecuador's capital city

The two chains or cordilleras of the Andes enclose a series of 10 basins or valleys where approximately half the population lives. The main highland cities of Ibarra, Otavalo, Quito, Latacunga, Ambato, Riobamba, Baños, Cuenca and Loja are all located in intermontane valley areas. Peasant, dairy and cut flower farming dominate valley agriculture while small industry and services dominate highland city economies. Most of the rest of the population lives in the Pacific coastal region where the Andes gradually soften into hills that meet the sea. The main cities here are Esmeraldas in the north and Puerto Viejo, Guayaquil and Machala in the south. Esmeraldas is the country's oil processing and shipping terminal while Guayaquil is the major shipping port for all other commodities. The southern Pacific coast is dedicated to banana and African palm plantations and shrimp farming.

Extractions: fax (614) 292-6213 The adoption and geographic spread of new products and techniques across the earth's surface, termed more generally innovation diffusion , has been a major concern of Dr. Brown's research. His 1966 dissertation on this topic, based on field work in Sweden under the distinguished geographer Torsten Hagerstrand and reported in a Lund Studies monograph, examined communications technology. In 1973, he initiated a large scale project examining a variety of innovations in the United States, Latin America, and Africa. This NSF supported research led to the book Innovation Diffusion: A New Perspective (1981), which was termed a unique contribution by reviews in disciplines as diverse as Marketing, Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and History of Science, as well as Geography. Earlier social science research had emphasized adoption of innovations. By contrast, Brown introduced and elaborated the idea that diffusion largely reflects the actions of entities supplying innovations, which control who has the opportunity to adopt.

Extractions: Land Use/Land Cover Change in Ecuador The project study area is located in the northeastern corner of Ecuador, in the region known as the Oriente. The Oriente is composed of both frontier farm settlements and protected reserves and parks. The farming areas are settled by Ecuadorians who have immigrated to this region as early as the 1970s. In contrast, indigenous groups mainly reside within the reserves and parks, although there are a few who live on relatively pristine land outside the protected zones. City Life in the Oriente The Amazon rainforest stretches for more than 2,500,000 square miles across much of South America. Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela all contain parts of the rain forest. Because of its immense size it has an effect on humans throughout the planet. In recent years however, this critical natural resource has been threatened as population pressures in Amazonia have led to clear cutting of forest for agriculture and other activities. The Carolina Population Center is studying population, deforestation and agricultural practices in a region of the headwaters of the Amazon river in north-east Ecuador. This CPC project has received assistance from NASA and is a part of its Mission to Planet Earth project.
