Extractions: J.E. Smithells Introduction The Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Department (previously the AERD Centre) has been actively concerned with the needs and changing roles of women in the context of agricultural and rural development since its inception. This concern has taken the form of research and publications, provision of a range of short courses and formal taught courses (including the institution of a Diploma level course in 1989), and contributions to the international discussion about the importance of women in rural development and the special issues which this raises. In 1968/69, the Overseas Development Ministry (now the Overseas Development Administration [ODA]) funded a survey by the AERDC of the training needs of women extension staff in selected African and Caribbean countries (Smithells, 1972). On the basis of the findings, a typology of training provision was proposed in terms of the functions of the training for both individuals and organisations: (a) Basic training
