Information collection takes many forms, including living and working among the population being studied; performing field investigations; analyzing historical records and documents; experimenting with human or animal subjects in a laboratory; administering standardized tests and questionnaires; and preparing and interpreting maps and computer graphics. The work of specialists in social science varies greatly, although specialists in one field may find that their research overlaps work being conducted in another discipline.

They conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor economic trends, and develop forecasts. They research issues such as energy costs, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, business cycles, taxes, or employment levels. Economists devise methods and procedures for obtaining the data they need. For example, sampling techniques may be used to conduct a survey, and various mathematical modeling techniques may be used to develop forecasts. Preparing reports, including tables and charts, on research results is an important part of an economists job. Presenting economic and statistical concepts in a clear and meaningful way is particularly important for economists whose research is directed toward making policies for an organization. Some economists might also provide economic analysis to the media.

This continues the drive for continuous improvement in the quality of the indexes. The price indexes of the Overseas Trade and Services development project also originated from recommendations made in the 1991 Report of the Review Committee on Macro-economic Statistics. The primary objectives of the project were to: determine an appropriate methodology for trade indexes of services extend the existing trade indexes to include services improve the quality of the merchandise trade and volume indexes by using direct measures of price where unit prices are shown to be unreliable undertake an investigation into the content of the merchandise trade indexes.
