This type of treatment is usually outpatient and patients are given an oral dose of synthetic opiate, usually methadone, in a dosage sufficient to block the effects of the opiate, yet maintain a stable non-euphoric state free from the physiological cravings. This is a transition program that allows the patient to seek appropriate counseling and social services.

The cornea is the part of the eye that allows light to enter the eye. The conjunctiva is a membrane that covers the white part of the eye. A healthy cornea will get all its oxygen and nutrients through the three-layered "tear film." The normal tear film consists of three layers. The outer layer contains oil, which reduces evaporation of the remaining layers of tears. The middle layer is 98% water. The inner layer, which has direct contact with the cornea, is made of mucous and helps to keep the water layers on the surface of the eye. The breakdown of any or all of the three-layered tear film leads to dry eye, which results in lack of nutrients and oxygen to the cornea.
