Extractions: Learning more about drug abuse can be the first step toward recognizing a problem and deciding to do something about it. Often the first person in the family to get help for a drug abuse problem is not the drug abuser himself. When one person in the family uses drugs, everyone suffers. Unfortunately, one of the symptoms of addiction is the same problem that keeps the drug abuser from getting help. That symptom is denial. It is the inability of the addicted person to admit that they have a problem. Sometimes family members also have some of this denial. The first step is to learn more about drug abuse. For general information, you can contact the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) at (301) 468-2600. This is a citizens' clearinghouse for information on all kinds of substance abuse issues. You could also call the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence at 1-800-NCA-CALL. Extractions: Director Treatment/Intervention Definitions Outpatient Treatment In an outpatient program the youth attends counseling or other activities on a regular basis while living at home. Inpatient Treatment The youth lives away from home either in a hospital setting or in a facility that is solely for the purpose of treatment of addictions. Often this type of facility is called "residential." Residential Therapeutic Community These are highly structured programs in which patients stay at a residence typically for 6-12 months. This type of treatment is indicated for people who have long histories of drug dependence or involvement in serious criminal activities. Methadone maintenance is usually more successful at retaining clients with opiate dependence. This type of treatment is usually outpatient and patients are given an oral dose of synthetic opiate, usually methadone, in a dosage sufficient to block the effects of the opiate, yet maintain a stable non-euphoric state free from the physiological cravings. This is a transition program that allows the patient to seek appropriate counseling and social services.

Extractions: Just the Facts: Recovery/Relapse Stages of Recovery Chemical dependency is a disease that causes a person to lose control over use of alcohol or other drugs. It affects every aspect of the person as well as his family and friends. The goal of recovery from this destructive disease is to eliminate dependence on drugs, achieve abstinence, and return to physical, psychological, social and spiritual health. The recovering individual goes through specific stages to acquire the skills necessary to maintain sobriety. These stages include: PRETREATMENT Before someone can make a commitment to a treatment program, he must realize that his use of drugs is not normal, but abusive. This abuse usually results in serious consequences such as a breakdown of the family or loss of employment. This type of event is referred to as a "motivational crisis" and causes the addict to realize that his problems are serious and he needs help. This phase is sometimes referred to as "hitting bottom." Recent research indicates that early intervention by family, friends, employers, or treatment professionals can start the recovery process before this crisis period occurs, although it is often the crisis which forces the individual to seek help. CHOOSING TREATMENT Important considerations in choosing an appropriate treatment program are: Matching the individual with an appropriate treatment program The type of drug/drugs being abused Presence of other mental and physical problems, such as schizophrenia or diabetes
Extractions: Health Information Dry Eyes What is Dry Eye? Dry Eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), stems from an imbalance in the quantity or the quality of tears. The function of tears is to bathe, lubricate, and nourish the surface of the eye. This helps keep the cornea and conjunctiva healthy. The cornea is the part of the eye that allows light to enter the eye. The conjunctiva is a membrane that covers the white part of the eye. A healthy cornea will get all its oxygen and nutrients through the three-layered "tear film." The normal tear film consists of three layers. The outer layer contains oil, which reduces evaporation of the remaining layers of tears. The middle layer is 98% water. The inner layer, which has direct contact with the cornea, is made of mucous and helps to keep the water layers on the surface of the eye. The breakdown of any or all of the three-layered tear film leads to dry eye, which results in lack of nutrients and oxygen to the cornea.
