Extractions: Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) In 1983, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles School District launched the current drug-education program of choice in the United States, Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The D.A.R.E. program is a 17-week course, administered in the fifth and sixth grade, by trained police officers. Short courses at lower grade levels and supplementary junior high school and high school programs are also available. D.A.R.E. teaches children to abstain from drugs, alcohol, and gangs and secondarily tries to boost self-esteem and resistance to peer pressure. D.A.R.E. America, the non-profit group that creates and sells the curricula, say approximately 80% of U.S. school districts currently carry the program. Over the last 10 years, numerous research studies have shown the D.A.R.E. program ineffective at deterring children from experimenting with drugs. The first study to show D.A.R.E. useless was administered by Indiana University Researchers Earl Wysong and Richard Aniskiewicz. Using psychological and D.A.R.E. tests, the researchers compared D.A.R.E. and non-D.A.R.E. high school students and found that drug use was identical for both groups except that the D.A.R.E. students smoked marijuana regularly more than their non-D.A.R.E. counterparts. Other studies including those done by the U.S. General Accounting Office and the Research Triangle Institute (sponsored by the Justice Department) further concluded that D.A.R.E. had little or no long-term effects.

Major policy documents on drug education have encouraged workers in this area to consider harnessing the potential of working with parents and other community members to make their work more effective. This qualitative study aimed to look behind the abstract notion that partnership is always a good thing and examine closer the sorts of issues that might arise in any attempt to collaborate on the issue of drugs. "Children's knowledge, where it does exist, is usually patchy and superficial. They talk of 'drugs' generally, but usually showed little understanding of the different types of drug available or their effects." But first, what did primary school children know about drugs? Were they ripe for education on this topic? The study used qualitative methods to explore the answers to these questions. Focus group discussions using 'draw and write' techniques were used with groups of four or five children in each of the top four years of four primary schools. The schools themselves were chosen to represent the range of environments in which Scottish children now grow up, from inner city housing estates where drug use is rampant, to small town settings and even an island school in an essentially rural community.
