Extractions: Tips on Caring for Miniature Donkeys Feeding Grass is the primary feed your donkey requires. When your grass loses its nutrients, after the first frost, you will need to supplement with hay. Coastal Bermuda hay is best; alfalfa is too rich and fattening. Donkeys do well on a daily handful of horse/mule feed. Watch them carefully and keep their weight correct. Once overweight, they look and feel bad and it is difficult to trim them down. It is not a good idea to feed your donkey out of your hand; it encourages nipping. It is very important that donkeys have an iodized salt and mineral block at all times. Training It is a good idea to put a halter on a new foal the first week after birth. Foals are very receptive to learning. Put your hand on their chest and say "back" as you push them back a step or two and apply pressure to their halter. You can push your foal, by the lead line, a step to the right or to the left. Hold the lead line and go with the foal as she follows her dam. Very young foals can be successfully introduced to obstacles, so they will have very little fear. They can be taught to cross bridges, walk over logs, carry noisy sacks filled with cans, etc.

Donkey Care And Information At Shorecrest Farms In Linden, Pennsylvania ~ Miniat Donkey care Information at Shorecrest Farms in Linden, Pennsylvania. MINIATURE DONKEY care. Miniature donkeys have to be the most gentle, loving, and peoplefriendly equine in existence owning a donkey as a pet, the best-case scenario for you http://www.shorecrestfarms.com/donkey-care-information.html
Extractions: Miniature donkeys have to be the most gentle, loving, and people-friendly equine in existence. After years of owning horses and ponies, we were amazed at just how calm and easy to manage miniature donkeys are. Having a herd of miniature donkeys in your backyard is wonderful therapy - nothing soothes your nerves better after a stressful day than hearing a chorus of donkey brays! They just have a relaxing way about them that is difficult to put into words. Nutritional Requirements Miniature donkeys are very easy keepers. We have found that it is not necessary to grain the donkeys, with the exception of weanlings and pregnant/nursing jennets. Our pastures are more than sufficient during summer and fall, and during the winter and spring we provide alfalfa/grass hay, or straight timothy depending on what is available at that time. Miniature donkeys will get very heavy if fed too much, so you really have to be careful. It is just as un-healthy for a donkey to be overweight as it is for one to be malnourished. We provide a constant mineral salt supplement to all of our donkeys. We also provide a selenium block in all pastures since discovering we are in a selenium deficient area of the country. It is also necessary to provide fresh drinking water at all times. Donkeys are not like horses when it comes to drinking - a horse will drink out of a filthy water tub without hesitation, but we've found the donkeys will not. They prefer a clean bucket or tub of fresh water. On our farm, we have a mix of water sources. One pasture has a stream running through as its water source. Another has an automatic waterer that provides a constant supply of fresh cool water. Remaining pastures are handled "the old fashioned way"...running water from a hose or pump into tubs or buckets.

Extractions: info@ispca.ie Donkeys are appealing, intelligent animals, but they can be demanding in terms of time, land and money. They require daily visits and particular attention during the winter. - Companionship - to be with other donkeys or ponies and people. They can be noisy when deprived of a companion - A net inside a field shelter or stable containing a mix of hay and barley straw and occasionally an apple or a carrot to eat. - A salt/mineral lick - Concentrates (high energy food enriched with minerals and vitamins) in winter months - A constant supply of fresh clean water - A hectare of pasture, preferably divided in two so that parts of the field can be used in rotation (used alternately)
Extractions: info@ispca.ie Overpopulation Overpopulation sees a lot more dogs behind bars Ireland has five times more stray dogs than the UK. The chances of a dog becoming a stray and ending up destroyed is 20 times greater for a dog in Ireland than it is for a dog in the UK. There is an overpopulation crises and the ongoing annual destruction of 25,000 - 30,000 dogs in Irish pounds is a result of this crisis. "Spaying" and "neutering" are surgical procedures used to prevent pets from reproducing. In a female animal, "spaying" consists of removing the uterus and ovaries. The technical term is ovario-hysterectomy. For a male animal, "neutering" involves the removal of the testicles, and this is known as castration. Neutering increases your pet's changes for a longer, healthier life - Spaying your female pet reduces her chances of developing mammary cancer and eliminates the threat of uterine and ovarian infections. Neutering your male dog or cat prevents testicular cancer and may prevent prostate problems. Neutered cats are less likely to roam and fight or get killed on the roads.

More than 2,500 such therapy animals, along with their human partners, help more than 350,000 people in 45 states each year, thanks to the Delta Society's Pet Partners Program. Working small miracles Pet Partners teams are rewarded for their efforts with the joy and satisfaction of seeing the difference that these specially-trained pets can make in people's lives - helping them heal through the comfort and motivation. Dickens, and his owner Susan Stone of Tenafly, NJ, began their Pet Partners career visiting Bergen Pines Hospital, a long-term facility for the elderly in Paramus, New Jersey. "He was soon creating little miracles among the patients," explains Susan. "One woman, who had stopped eating, began to have Jell-O after a visit. A remote and totally bedridden patient responded to the animal at her bedside, reaching out to touch him. A stroke victim, previously totally resistant to physical therapy, attempted to throw the ball for Dickens, who would return it to his hand."

Turkeys Donkeys If you would like to find out more about donkeys, then please visit my Animal Facts: Donkeys page. Donkeys are among the worst abused animals on earth. In many societies donkeys are regarded as low status animals and can be bought very inexpensively. Because of this, they are usually very mistreated. In a lot of countries they are used as working animals. Often they are forced to do more work than their small bodies can handle. And because they can be bought so inexpensively, they are very poorly taken care of. Because a new donkey is often cheaper than veterinary care, sick or injured donkeys are often tied to posts without food or water and left to die. It is also a very common for stray donkeys to get severely abused just for fun. In countries like Spain and Greece, donkeys are used as "Donkey Taxis". The majority of Donkey Taxi operators only care about the profit and don't take good care of the animals at all. During the day they are exposed to very high temperatures with little or no shelter, food or water and are made to carry people that are too heavy for their bodies. At night, they usually get their feet tied together to prevent them from walking off. In other countries donkeys are sometimes kept as pets. They are however often very poorly taken care of. It is not uncommon to find donkeys left to fend for themselves in backyards. Pet donkeys are frequently found with deformed and crippled feet, emaciated bodies from parasite infestation, dental problems or lack of food. Other pet donkeys are overfed and suffer from severe obesity.
