Extractions: Endangered Animals to Color Online Endangered animals are those species that are in danger of going extinct. Their reproductive rates are lower than their mortality rates over long periods of time, so their numbers are diminishing. The reasons for this are varied, but very often involve a loss of habitat to people. When a species is listed as endangered or threatened, it is not a death sentence. Many animals, like the bald eagle and the American alligator, were on the brink of extinction and are now recovering. Many species, however, will not recover, and could be lost forever. Throughout time, animal species have been going extinct (long before people evolved); paleontologists estimate that well over 90 percent of all plant and animal species that ever existed have gone extinct.
Extractions: Black-footed ferrets hunt prairie dogs at night, but occasionally they are active above ground during the day. In search of prey, they move along in loping bounds from one burrow to the next. [US FWS Line Art by Robert Savannah] Photograph (39.3 K image) [US FWS Photograph By Rick Krueger] Biologists consider black-footed ferrets to be the most endangered mammal in the United States. Recently, however, thanks to aggressive captive-breeding and reintroduction programs, much progress has been made toward recovering the ferret population. Black-footed ferrets are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae), a distinction they share with weasels, martens, fishers, otters, minks, wolverines and skunks. Larger than weasels, black-footed ferrets are long, slender-bodied animals similar in size to a mink. They are characterized by a brownish-black mask across the face, a brownish head, black feet and legs, and a black tip on the tail. Ferrets' short, buff-colored fur becomes lighter on the underside of their bodies. The middle of the back has brown-tipped guard hairs that create the appearance of a dark saddle. Black-footed ferrets may look like the ferrets found in pet stores but they are actually a different species. Both belong to the weasel family but ferrets sold as pets evolved in Europe, while endangered black-footed ferrets evolved in North America.

Extractions: We inherited a rather undesirable grey, moth-eaten old tomcat with an ear missing. We named him Smudge. This unattractive but still noble creature used us a feeding stop and occasional shelter while about his dubious business. He did not once bring home a lady friend, let alone the product of his ungirded, unguarded even, loins. I remember, as a five or six year old, throwing the protesting animal on to an (unlit) fire which scared the proverbial out of him and attaching a rubber ball with a length of elastic to his poor tail which caused much hilarity in me, but not in the strangely trusting old Smudge. The awful guilt and sadness to follow meant that these dreadfulnesses of brat-child excess were never to repeat in my subsequent relationships with that most independent but people- loving companion, Felis felis, Felis domesticus, Felis vulgaris, or Felis pussycatimus, depending on your level of schoolboy Latin and taxonomic species recognition.

Endangered species are species that are in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of their range. It is unlawful to kill, harm, or harass endangered species. LISTED: 35 Federal Register 8495; June 2, 1970. HISTORICAL STATUS: Black-footed ferrets once ranged throughout the Great Plains. Populations declined dramatically in the 1980s. The last known population was found at Meeteetse, Wyoming, in 1981. The remaining 18 individuals from this population were captured and put into a captive breeding facility in 1987. PRESENT STATUS: From 1987 until 1991 the black-footed ferret may have been extirpated in the wild. In the fall of 1991, 49 captive animals were reintroduced into the wild in Wyoming. The reintroduced animals were designated an experimental population. Additional ferrets have been introduced each year since 1991. Unconfirmed sightings from other areas continue to be reported. There are still about 400 black-footed ferrets in captivity. In Montana, parts of Phillips County are targeted for ferret reintroduction. HABITAT: The black-footed ferret inhabits short grass prairies, always within close proximity to prairie dog towns.

Extractions: By the early 1960s, wolves were almost eradicated from the upper Midwest. Why did the wolves disappear? State and federal bounties (no longer in effect), habitat loss, poaching, car kills, disease, starvation and parasites all contributed to their decline. Those of us living in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest are lucky. Wolf songs are returning. The return of wolves is largely due to the 1973 Endangered Species Act. Wolves are recovering naturally and doing very well. Mainly they walked back into the region starting about 1974. Now we have about 335 wolves and 90 packs across the northern third and the central forested regions of Wisconsin. Wolves are recovering in Michigan with equal success. On April 1, 2003, wolves in Wisconsin and Michigan were reclassified from the status of endangered to threatened by the federal government. Under the Wisconsin Wolf Management Plan, approved by the state Natural Resources Board in October 1999, wolves should be removed from the state endangered and threatened species list once the population remained at above 250 wolves outside of reservations for one year. The process off Wisconsin state delisting is planned for late in 2003. The federal delisting process is expected to begin in early 2004.

They are gone forever - they are now extinct. There are over 50 types, or species, of Australian animals and over 60 species of Australian plants that are extinct. It is very sad, but it is too late. Extinction is forever. About 240 species of native animals and over 1160 species of native plants may become extinct in the near future. These animals and plants that are in danger of dying out completely are called threatened species. The main reason that animals and plants become extinct or threatened is because their habitat has been destroyed or changed. Their habitat is the place where they live. It contains all that they need to survive: space, light, water, food, shelter and a place to breed. Humans have a lot of power to change and destroy habitats. Pollution from cars and trucks, chemicals and intoduced animals and plants that have gone wild all have an effect on natural environments. So does clearing native vegetation to make way for farming, building roads and cities, and damming rivers to provide water for people.

Extractions: BLACK-FOOTED FERRET North America Unknown The rarest native mammal in the United States, the black-footed ferret is a short-legged, slender-bodied weasel. It measures just 1 1/2 feet (46 cm) nose to tail. This small carnivore once was widely distributed throughout the North American Great Plains from Alberta, Canada, south through the Rocky Mountains to the southwestern United States. The last wild black-footed ferrets were taken into captivity in 1987. Today, the ferrets have been reintroduced to a few limited areas in the state of Wyoming. The black-footed ferret is a nocturnal prowler whose fate is closely tied to that of the prairie dog. The ferret eats ground squirrels, mice, birds, and insects. It lives in burrows dug by prairie dogs, which also are its primary prey. A colony of prairie dogs 100 to 148 acres in size is necessary to support one ferret. Massive hunting and poisoning campaigns against the prairie dog, its main food source, caused the ferret to decline. Since the pioneers arrived on the Great Plains, ranchers and farmers have conducted an extensive campaign to get rid of prairie dogs, which were considered pests. Discovery of sylvatic plague in the colonies stepped up efforts to eliminate the prairie dogs. From 1900 to present, prairie dog populations plummeted to about 5 to 10 percent of their former numbers.

Extractions: Animal Lovers Gift Shop What Are Endangered and Threatened Species? A century ago, a bird called the passenger pigeon lived in North America. There were so many passenger pigeons that people often saw great flocks of them flying overhead containing thousands, even millions, of birds. Today, there is not a single one left. What happened? The passenger pigeon became extinct. All living passenger pigeons disappeared from the earth entirely. The passenger pigeon became extinct for two reasons. First, the forests where it lived were cut down to make way for farms and cities. Second, many pigeons were shot for sport and because they were good to eat. At that time, there were no hunting laws to protect endangered species like there are now. The passenger pigeon is one of the many plants and animals that once lived on our planet and have become extinct. For example, dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers all became extinct long ago. More recently, the dodo bird and the sea mink also have disappeared. Extinction has been going on since life began on earth. But today, extinction is happening faster than ever before. There are more than 1000 endangered or threatened species in the United States today.
