Extractions: The war is the result of a large-scale Eritrean military invasion of Ethiopian territory. Eritrea has recently announced claims on these territories that were being peacefully administered by Ethiopia. But international law forbids the use of force to change the status quo. A country which has territorial claims on areas peacefully administered by another country must not resort to force; it has to bring the issue to international mediation. The Eritrean invasion which took place on May 12, 1998, violated this fundamental tenet of international law. After the invasion the Eritrean government stated that it had "brought under its control large swathes of territory." Eritrea claims that Ethiopia provoked the invasion because of a clash on May 6, 1998 between Ethiopian police and Eritrean army units in Badime. However, Badime and its environs were under peaceful Ethiopian-administration at the time; as established by an OAU fact-finding mission. Eritrea has not been able to provide a logical explaination for why it sent armed Eritrean units into Badime on May 6 in the first place.

The minister said that this moment was very important for the countries of the subregion, in particular for those of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). A recent edition of Le Monde des Livres (23 January 2003) contained a rare page devoted solely to new works on the French empire. The two books that the editor selected out were Marc Ferros Le livre noir du colonialisme a collection of articles detailing well-known colonial atrocitiesand yet another of Pascal Blanchard and Sandrine Lemaires popular volumes on the most spectacular and racist sides of colonial culture in France, Culture coloniale: La France conquise par son empire 1870-1931 (this coming fast upon last years Zoos humains ).[1] Both reviews were enthusiastic; they were also entirely uncritical. I would not want to read into this single set of reviews more than is warranted. But taken at face value, it would seem that a newspaper that regularly features serious historical scholarship might also call attention to, or at least show an awareness of, the more nuanced work that is beginning to emerge in France regarding its colonial past, particularly with regard to sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. It is very easy to condemn colonialisms most visible excesses. It is considerably harder to lay bare the myriad more subtle ways in which colonialism worked its way into the life of the nation over the course of the last centuryways which linger (and malinger) still. Yet this is precisely the kind of history that a growing number of French scholars are now attempting to write.[2]

I've also inherited the Dutch height, at 6' 3". I have many varied interests. I'm truly a jack of many trades and master of none. My greatest interest is my love for travel. I love to travel and see other parts of the world and cultures. I was very fortunate to be able to that in my Navy career. I was exposed to areas of the Middle East (Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan), Africa (Seychelles, Kenya, Djbouti), Asia/Pacific Islands (Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Philippines) Australia, and Europe (France and Italy). It was amazing to see so many different places and cultures. I loved it. SInce then I've continued my travels, but focused on Europe. I love the European culture and continent and never tire of travelling there. I've been to Austria, Czeck Republic (only as Czeckoslovakia at the time), France, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and England. I am currently trying to bring my German and French back up to conversational level and want to learn Dutch (my native tongue).
