Purpose: To support and promote the establishment of reading motivation programs, including the distribution of inexpensive books to students in order to encourage students to learn to read. Funding History Fiscal Year Appropriation Fiscal Year Appropriation The Inexpensive Book Distribution Program is directed at preschool, elementary, and secondary students. As a result of the National Literacy Act Amendment of 1991, the program places a selection priority, for new grantees, on children with special needssuch as low-income children, children at risk for school failure, children with disabilities, emotionally disturbed children, foster children, homeless children, migrant children, children without access to libraries, institutionalized children, incarcerated children, and children whose parents are institutionalized or incarcerated. Since the Literacy Act passed, 35 new projectsthat serve over 20,000 childrenhave been added to the 3,000 previously funded projects. The Administration's proposal for reauthorizing the Inexpensive Book Distribution Program would encourage local capacity building by limiting the number of years projects can receive funding, and give priority to new projects serving children with special needs.

Easter is a blend of paganism and Christianity. The word Easter is derived from "Eostre" an ancient Anglo-Saxon Goddess. She symbolized the rebirth of the day at dawn and the rebirth of life in the spring. The arrival of spring was celebrated all over the world long before the religious meaning became associated with Easter.

And make it pizza! Last March during National Nutrition month Susan and her creative and dedicated school health team of parents, food service staff, teachers, MSU Extension staff, and other community supporters conducted two nutrition education activities which were funded by a $500 Michigan Team Nutrition TEAM CASH! III grant. Gimme Five was a 5 A Day promotional activity where students and families were invited to build their own fresh fruit or veggie pizzas. Got Milk? was a milk-drinking promotion where students were invited to learn about the benefits of drinking milk, taste-test different types of milk, and get a family picture taken with their whole family sporting milk mustaches. Both activities went really well, explains Susan, We wanted to make sure people would come so we scheduled it on a night when families were already planning on coming to the school. We knew our pizzas were definitely a success when people turned down the traditional pizza and pop we were offering in the other room, and opted for our veggie pizzas. Weve had lots of positive feedback, well definitely do something similar to this event again in March.

The goal of this initiative is to build on innovative ideas that reduce the recidivism of offenders returning to their communities from correctional facilities. The initiative encourages citizens, government agencies, social service organizations, and community-based organizations, to use existing resources to collaborate on programs that will protect their communities by providing for the successful reentry of offenders. Applicants are encouraged to focus on juveniles and young adults because of the criminal propensities of these particular offender populations. The main eligible age range in the juvenile category is 14 to 17 years. Eligible applicants are State and local units of government that represent a partnership between institutional and community corrections agencies. For juveniles, the partnership must include the State juvenile department of corrections and a local agency involved in the provision of services and/or supervision of juveniles returning from correctional facilities.
