We ask that the aspiring District of Columbia candidates speak to the issues raised in this platform during the 1998 elections. Establish a high quality school system that offers multiple programs and options (and supports them) such that all students can graduate prepared for gainful employment, post secondary education and training or both.

Introduction On the following tables, the Alaska State Library presents a summary of the public library statistics collected from FY1996 through FY2001. For each year, tables are presented in two formats: first, in alphabetical order by the name of the town in which the library is located, and, second, sorted by population served by the library. The tables include statistics reported by the libraries that received the public library assistance grant for each fiscal year. While the list of Alaska public libraries is generally stable, a few libraries are added and deleted each fiscal year based on their receipt or non-receipt of the grant. All the information reported in the annual reports has been entered into a spreadsheet. Specialized tables can be generated upon request. Please contact the State Library if you need special statistical information.

In 1999 the UO Faculty Instructional Training Group concluded that the institution needed to implement a course management system for general faculty use. The software platform the committee chose was Blackboard, primarily for its ease of use and gentle learning curve they felt that those two factors would do the most to encourage reluctant faculty. UO has 13,400 undergraduates and uses SCT Banner as their SIS system. Universiteit Maastricht [Maastricht, The Netherlands] Universiteit Maastricht is one of the youngest and most rapidly growing Dutch universities. The university has dedicated itself to providing the highest quality education and research practices to students. With problem based learning (PBL) a cornerstone to the university's approach to teaching and learning, it was essential that their selected online environment incorporate the institution's existing PBL application, Polaris. Beginning in 2000, the institution partnered with Blackboard based on the platform's ease of use and ability to integrate Polaris into the Blackboard Learning System via Building Blocks®. Today, the institution hosts more than 5,000 courses and communities on Blackboard.

Leadership School Administrators Article S C H O O L A D M I N I S T R A T O R S A R T I C L E Many states are testing new principals and eliminating established principals' tenure. Will these measures improve our schools? And after the dust settles, and all evaluation is complete, will there be enough qualified principals left to staff our schools? In the U.S., nearly 80,000 public elementary and high school principals oversee the work of some 3 million teachers and 52 million students. While most U.S. states require prospective teachers to pass a qualifying test, few require their principals to be held to the same standard. According to an April telephone poll, most Americans would like to see that discrepancy addressed. "More than half of those polled agreed that testing new principals before they are licensed is about as important as testing prospective teachers. Another 22 percent said it was more important," states a May 6 Education Week article about the survey (
