Extractions: Site Map October 13, 1999 Darien, Ill., education company Copernicus Interactive Inc. is creating new online communities for schools and school districts to create more interaction between families and schools. The Copernicus Education Gateway provides a local Internet-based community with learning, communication and professional development resources and direct links to local schools. The site does not contain resources specifically designed for special education teachers or parents, though it has listed other Internet special education resources on past news pages, which are updated daily. Through the site's "School Notes" feature, teachers can post assignments, tests and other class information for students to access, while parents can get information on their children's progress. By allowing schools and teachers to post information on the web site, the Copernicus Education Gateway enables parents, teachers and students to communicate electronically. Such interaction could increase overall parent participation in their students' education, the company argues. For example, the father of a first-grade student at Indian Head, Ga., Elementary School e-mailed his child's class from a submarine in the Atlantic Ocean, according to teacher Tracy McMullen. The students sent back questions about life on the submarine. In addition, the site features a "collaboration station" designed to help students in different communities contact each other and help teachers talk to each other and to parents. The site also provides a shopping area for education-related items.

Extractions: "I am speaking out about this because I was an educator for twenty years before I became a Senator. I speak out because as a Senator, I have been in a school almost every two weeks for the past ten years and I have seen, as you have, the inequality so many children confront. I also have seen how much difference a good system, a good school and a good teacher can make for a child. "That all citizens will be given an equal start through a sound education is one of the most basic, promised rights of our democracy. Our chronic refusal as a nation to guarantee that right for all children, including poor children, is a national disgrace. We cannot be so blind that we do not see that meeting the most basic needs of so many of our children condemns them to lives and futures of frustration, chronic underachievement, poverty and violence. "But, in the end, this is a spiritual issue for me. We must invest in the skills and intellect and character of our children, not because we know that if we do, they will be more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to be involved in crime, although that is true. We must invest in children not because they will be more likely to go on to college and to lead more productive lives, although that is also true. We should invest in the skills and intellect and character of our children because they are all under four feet tall, they are all beautiful and we should be nice to them."

Our belief is that a strong, organized, and informed public will yield high quality education for our children. A recent report, A Place for Art , completed by the Kennedy Center along with DCPS, shows that there are no standards or accountability for arts programming and there is a lack of district-wide leadership for comprehensive arts integration, both discipline specific and integrated arts. See the Report Contact DC VOICE if you would like to promote city-wide awareness of the value of arts integration in our schools.
