William David Tranbarger and Nova Smith Tranbarger, were both enrolled in the high school division. Russell and his sister, Judy Tranbarger Bible, who was too young to attend the academy when the family lived in the front apartment of the old administration building, visited the campus this past summer. Russell Tranbarger and Judy Tranbarger Bible stand in front of a picture of their father and mother, who both graduated from the academy in the Class of 1948. The Tranbarger boys apparently had some time on their hands occasionally when they were young students here. Russell recalls the day the smell of peanut butter got the best of them and they sneaked into the school store, took a supply of peanut butter and crackers (which were manufactured on campus under the supervision of Mrs. William Hall), and took their treasure to the old swimming pool to eat. Unfortunately for them, Mr. York Stewart was watching from his dorm window. Mr. Stewart gave them a whipping, then summoned their mother, who whipped them again. When their father got home they got their third whipping in one day.

Extractions: So Your Kid is An Aspiring Artiste? For any parent overseas, distance can make it difficult to find the right American school for a child. For those whose kids seem destined for the performing arts, the task is doubly hard: Auditions and school visits can be impossible to arrange. To ease this task, FSJ has researched some highly regarded performing arts schools public and private that you may want to consider. That's not to say that a youngster with a strong desire to play music, sing, act or dance necessarily needs a specialized school. For example, Katie Buck, who grew up in the Foreign Service and who graduated in 1999 as a theater major from Wesleyan University, attended Sidwell Friends School, a highly regarded, and nonspecialized, private secondary school. Buck says, "I don't at all regret going to that school, though I wish I'd taken more acting classes. But at that point I wasn't sure I wanted to narrow myself to the arts." Last year, Buck presented her one-woman play, "I-Site," based on growing up as a "third-culture kid," to the Foreign Service Youth Foundation. She is now living in New York City and working in theater and television. Arguing in favor of a specialized arts school, however, is the limited arts programing that many public schools have nowadays. "When it comes to budget, arts programs are the first to be cut," notes John Mahlmann, executive director of the Music Educators National Conference.

Extractions: The Greenwood Institute is an affiliate of The Greenwood School, a pre-preparatory boarding school for 40 boys, ages 10-15, who have dyslexia. Long before researchers began acknowledging that cultural definitions of intelligence are too limited, Greenwood School founders made the philosophical commitment to focus on abilities rather than disabilities. Thus the school has been able to form a variety of bridges between gifted, special and regular educational programs. By emphasizing the intellectual and emotional/creative strengths of its students, and by incorporating remedial language therapy into every facet of the school day, Greenwood School has set a new standard in remedial language education, earned an excellent reputation among its peers, and a loyal and grateful following among its parents and alumni. Greenwood Institute will be working closely with several major research centers, including those at Yale University, the University of Washington, Tufts University, and Wayne State University in Detroit, to evaluate its approaches to both student remediation and teacher education. Thomas Scheidler founded the Greenwood Institute in 1981, in order to share the knowledge and expertise of Greenwood School teachers through conferences, workshops, consulting services, and teacher training. Louisa Cook Moats, Ed.D., joined the Institute as director of clinical services and training in 1994.

Extractions: August 14, 2001 by Darcy Olsen Darcy Olsen is director of education and child policy at the Cato Institute. While the President's education plan for national testing is steaming its way toward final passage, another campaign of even greater long-term importance is emerging from beneath the political radar screen: The crusade for mandatory public preschool. At the American Federation of Teachers' biennial conference this summer, AFT President Sandra Feldman called for a "national commitment" to schooling all 3- and 4-year-olds. At least Feldman was magnanimous enough to suggest that preschool remain voluntary. District of Columbia Councilman Kevin Chavous, on the other hand, sees no problem with forcibly taking young children from their parents. His ominously titled "Compulsory School Attendance Amendment Act" would make school, well, compulsory, for every preschool-aged child in the nation's capital. D.C. tots aren't the only ones trading their sippy-cups for school desks. Four-year-olds in New York and California have already taken seats in public schools. And visionary bureaucrats in Texas and New Jersey have opened public schools to 3-year-olds.
