The books, which are either trade directories or patent book are more useful for one-name studies than they are in finding an individual or a family ancestor. Hence users of the data should be aware that the presence of households from a particular place doesn't mean necessarily that all households for that parish have been transcribed.

Internet Proxy Servers - Internet bandwidth or the speed of the connection to the internet is an important issue to schools. By caching the lookups of internet information on the server, we can dramatically speed up access and preserve bandwidth. With a single v.90 modem we can connect to the internet at 50 kilobits/second. The local lan typically operates at either 10 or 100 Megabits/second. This is between 200x - 2000x faster. By requiring the workstations to lookup information through the proxy cache and by allowing the cache to store all that it looks up we can dramatically speed up the rate of retrieval. When there is a request for information already stored locally in the proxy server cache, it is returned to the workstation at lan speeds with no impact on the tiny 50k internet connection. By only allowing the cache to use the limited 50kbit bandwidth, we can help to preserve it. The proxy software of choice currently is the freely available SQUID software which runs on Unix based servers (found at http://squid.nlanr.net
