Spain's New World dominion already extended across the West Indies and Central and South America, yet her foot hold was tenuous. Having few industries or resources at home to rely on, she was dependent on colonial commodities, both natural and human, to maintain her grasp in the Caribbean. The conquests of the Aztecs of Mexico (1519-21) and the Incas of Peru (1531-35) had opened fabulous veins of wealth. These conquests also alerted other European nations to the untapped profits across the Atlantic Ocean. To secure her position unquestionably, Spain sought to control all lands surrounding the Caribbean Basin. La Florida was important strategically was also a possible source of undiscovered gold and riches. Hernando de Soto was about 14 years old when he first sailed from Spain, probably in 1514, bound for a conquistador's life in the New World. Over the next 15 years, he participated in military actions against Indians and Spanish land poachers in modern-day Panama and Nicaragua, using his rewards to fund profitable private ventures. His valor during the conquest of the Incas of Peru earned him greater wealth, which he used to finance his expedition to La Florida. Hernando de Soto's agreement with Charles V of Spain was simple. He was to explore, exploit and colonize La Florida while bearing all costs. This would be the first major exploration of the interior of North America. In return, he would become Governor of Cuba and the new colony. De Soto and the Crown would divide the spoils. De Soto and his 622 soldiers arrived in Havana in June 1538. He filled the expedition's ranks with slave carriers, camp followers (including several women), artisans, priests, an engineer, 200 horses, a herd of pigs, and fierce fighting dogs for punishing Indians. Landing near Tampa Bay on May 30, 1539, he left a temporary colony of 100 men captained by Pedro Calderon and led his army inland.

Extractions: Hernando De Soto is one of the most well known Spanish explorers of the Americas. He is known for discovering the Mississippi River and traveling throughout the southeast. His expedition had many and far reaching consequences. Being one of the earlier explorers into this region he did not have massive amounts of information available. This would make travel difficult along with hostile natives De Soto had the odds stacked against him from the beginning. This did not matter because he was a conquistador and adelantado. He knew no fear simply conquest. It is also uncertain when he came to the New World. Most evidence shows him sailing with Pedrarias Davila the newly named governor of Panama along with Francisco Coronado in 1514. He advanced quickly through the ranks. He was assigned the rank of Captain by 1520. He had participated in many military actions in Panama and Nicaragua alongside Ponce de Leon and Francisco Pizarro. In 1531, he left Panama a rich man gaining wealth from slave trading and gold taken from Indians. He put his wealth to use, building ships and maintaining cavalry and infantry. This was not enough for de Soto. After the conquest of Peru de Soto went back to Spain a wealthy man. He hired many servants and acquired the things that a man of his new station should have. He married Isabela de Bobadilla the daughter of Davila, the man he first set sail with to the New World. It was then that he began to petition the crown for permission to exploit and govern lands in the New World.
DeSoto State Park - The Welsh Caves have landed in Baldwin County, Al, long before hernando desoto. Dekalb County werevisited by explorers 300 years three trips instead of one to the new world. http://www.desotostatepark.com/lol-welsh caves.htm
Extractions: The Welsh Caves There are five caves located side by side with three of them interlocking by openings connecting each chamber. They are protected by the cliff in which they are carved and by the only trail to them. The trail that only one person can traverse at a time is 90 feet long and is so narrow that only one person can pass at a time. The trail averages in width two to five feet, and in some places is precarious and slippery. Historians say that Indians could not have built the caves due to the fact that none of the tribes of this area were familiar with the art of excavation. The legend and folklore of Prince Madoc (Mad dog) has it that the Welsh explorer may have landed in Baldwin County, Al, long before Hernando DeSoto. Is it possible that Alabama and Dekalb County were visited by explorers 300 years before Columbus discovered America? Many Historians believe so. One stated, "Madoc did indeed sail from Wales and did land on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. They maintain that he made three trips instead of one to the New World. None of the Indians who lived in the vicinity of these forts had ever worked in stone. Scientists who determine the approximate date of past events claim that timber found within the caves had been cut by axes centuries before the Spanish came to the New World. Historically, one author wrote that the caves were part of a dreadful war, and those who constructed them, to have acted defensively. The caves are situated so that, in ancient times, 20 men could have held off an army of thousands.

Real Native Portraits Images for Reports 100 LINKS Cabeza de Vaca - HERNANDO de SOTO - Illinois Indiana Florida Georgia Carolina Alabama Tennessee Kentucky Missouri Arkansas Louisiana Texas Mississippi EPILOGUE Native Americans were invaded by Conquistadors five centuries ago. Not long after Columbus discovered the New World, Spain settled Indian villages along our coasts. Hernando de Soto invaded Panama in his teens. He was "inspired" by three Conquistadors: Ponce de León, Balboa and Magellan. All were famous New World Explorers: Ponce de León discovered North America, Balboa discovered the Pacific Ocean, and Magellan sailed across it to China, the greatest market in the World. Ponce de León, who had sailed with Columbus, and Balboa made their discoveries when DeSoto was 13 years old. Later, on "Missions" with Balboa in Panama, DeSoto learned that vicious dogs, fast horses, and extortion worked wonders on Natives. He was called the "Child of the Sun" by the Natives for attacking villages at dawn, capturing women and children, then holding them for ransom for their release. Land and Indians became objects of ownership. Magellan then sailed to China but lost his life on the long voyage when he took the long way - around South America. DeSoto got very rich by Conquering the Incas of Peru.

Extractions: DeSoto Caverns DeSoto Caverns are nestled between the lakes and Appalachian foothills of north Central Alabama. These caverns hold one of the most concentrated accumulations of onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactities found in the United States. DeSoto Caverns have a long and interesting history. By the late 17th century, when the Europeans began to penetrate what is now the Southeast United States, the dominant Indian population was the Creek tribe, so named by the Europeans because they built their villages along the large number of waterways in the area. By tribal tradition, the Creeks place the birthplace of the Creek Indian Nation at the cave near the Coosa River now known as DeSoto Caverns. In December of 1796, Benjamin Hawkins, a United States Agent among the Creeks appointed by George Washington, told of the magnificent beauty of the DeSoto Caverns in his report to Washington, making it the first officially reported cave in the United States. During the era of Prohibition, DeSoto Caverns were pressed into service as one of the area's speakeasies, where moonshine and gambling were available to those not too fastidious about adherence to the law. Because of the shootings and fights that erupted on a continuing basis, the caverns became known in the 1920s as "The Bloody Bucket," and Federal agents closed them down. Even when Prohibition was repealed, "The Bloody Bucket" was not reopened.
