School District of Spring Valley - Mission Statement Our mission is to provide a caring, respectful, challenging and equitable environment, in partnership with the community, that will enable all of our students to become responsible citizens. Role of the Guidance Counselor As school counselors, we are trained to help your children reach their full potential. There is a common misconception that the only role of the school counselor is to help students get into college. But there are countless situations we can help them get out of too. Tough courses, peer pressure, eating disorders, depression, school violence. It's a long list. And even the best parents with the best intentions don't always know what's on their children's minds. Often, children are more willing to open up to someone who doesn't have the power to ground them or to grade them. Someone who exists purely to guide them. It's been said that life is a journey, so make sure your kids have a guide. A collaborative relationship with the school counselor can reinforce that they are heading in the right direction. We don't pretend to have all of the answers, but we do have infinite resources. Give your school counselor a call, because there is a textbook for everything. Except LIFE!

Stomp Tokyo Review - Prom Night III: The Last Kiss movie, 29. When the school guidance counselor tells him that his grades won t allow him to go to med school, Alex becomes depressed. http://www.stomptokyo.com/movies/prom-night-iii.html
Extractions: Our rating: two lava lamps. Information about this film in the Internet Movie Database. Mary Lou and her Prom King. There's something about a bad movie franchise that just sucks us in, requiring that we watch all four parts (or five, or six...) in a completist frenzy. Perhaps it's the hope that, given enough chances, someone might actually make a good movie based on the premise, or at least wander far enough into self-parody to make the proceedings sufficiently entertaining. Prom Night III: The Last Kiss toys with the idea of self-parody, but just isn't funny enough to result in a pleasant video experience. Related by name only to the first Prom Night , and only tangentially to Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II Prom Night 3 returns us to the halls of Hamilton High, where prom queen Mary Lou Maloney was tragically burnt to death in an accident on her prom night in 1956. Since then, Mary Lou periodically haunts the school, looking to recreate her Prom Night and exact a bloody revenge on those who have happy high school lives. (This is the only way we can explain the fact that Mary Lou indiscriminately kills nearly everyone in her path.) The film begins in what we can only assume to be Hell. Hell is apparently non-stop forced aerobic exercise. (But hey, you didn't have to tell

Extractions: Back to Archives by Nancy Chevalier As we face the last months of a Minnesota winter, it seems appropriate to remind ourselves that this too shall pass. While most of us are certain that winter will move on and spring will arrive with the beauty of crocuses and lovely shades of green, for some, it is difficult to visualize this hopeful change. Typically, feelings of hopelessness and unhappiness are both transient and manageable, but when these feelings become long term or overwhelming, it is important to take action. Depressed mood is a common and universal part of human experience. It can happen at any age, in any socioeconomic group and for either gender. Our knowledge and understanding of adult depression at the theoretical, research and treatment levels has been vast and comprehensive. In contrast, it has only been more recently that professionals have come to recognize depression in children and adolescents. The diagnosis of depression is generally made by a psychologist or psychiatrist using the criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders- Fourth Edition, published by the American Psychological Association (1994). The disorder is classified across two parameters, severity and duration. Severity of depression is classified as mild, moderate or severe. The duration of depressed mood is the key question that allows the professional to determine the possible type of depression present. Normal sadness is usually short lived and a normal part of life. It is when depressed mood is severe, lasts for more than a few days or interferes significantly with life activities like school, family relations or social interactions, that there is cause for concern. The features of depression are also features of several other disorders found in childhood such as anxiety and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Extractions: Like most states, South Carolina has an acute need for mental health services for children, adolescents and their families. The range of psychological, educational, family and neighborhood problems affecting children, especially those with serious emotional disturbances or those in crisis, is extremely complex. One way that the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (DMH) is meeting these needs is through its school based programs. Under these programs, mental health professionals from community mental health centers set up their offices in schools in order to provide intensive, comprehensive services that are highly flexible, easily accessible and integrated into the everyday settings of children and their families. Brenda Lipe and Brittany use puppets to communicate during a school-based counseling session. School Based Mental Health Services Going Where the Children Are By Susan F. Craft, AMHC Several DMH community mental health centers began these services on a limited basis more than 15 years ago, but it wasn't until 1994 that DMH formalized its efforts by collaborating with the University of South Carolina's Institute for Families in Society and several other USC departments to develop a School Based Mental Health Project. With funding from a four-year grant from the S. C. Department of Health and Human Services, they piloted school based programs in 20 sites

Table of Contents Esoteric Psychology II - Chapter II - The Ray of Personality - Some Problems of Psychology Problems of Guidance, Dreams, and Depression I am dealing with these problems because of their exceeding prevalence at this time, due to the activities of various religiously or psychologically motivated groups, to the trend of certain schools, dedicated to the spread of religion or of psychology, and to the present world situation which has plunged so many sensitive people into a state of lowered spiritual vitality, accompanied usually by lowered physical vitality. This condition is widespread and based on wrong economic conditions. I am dealing with these before we take up our fourth point, 'The Diseases and Problems of Mystics', as they form an intermediate group, including many intelligent and well-intentioned citizens. The Problem of Guidance it might be of profit if I indicated anew the various schools of thought who feature "guidance" or whose methods and doctrines tend to the development of an inner attentive ear, and yet who fail to teach the distinctiveness of the sources of guidance, or to differentiate between the various sounds, voices and so-called inspired indications which that attentive ear may be trained to register. The emotionally inclined people in the Churches voices his submission, but fails to recognize that the voice is his own. He regards it as God's voice. For them, the way of [483] understanding, the recognition of the great Law of Cause and Effect (working out from life to life) and the interpretation of the problem in terms or a lesson to be mastered would spell release from negativity and blind, unintelligent acceptance. Life does not demand acquiescence and acceptance. It demands activity, the separation of the good and high values from the undesirable, the cultivation of that spirit of fight which will produce organization, understanding, and eventual emergence into a realm of useful spiritual activity.
