    Extractions: In 1939, a diplomat observer at the British legation in Copenhagen wrote in a report on the Danes: 'A few decades of material prosperity and the ministrations of an over-paternal Government seem to have sapped the spirit of a Viking race which can point to 1500 years of vigorous and independent history'. The statement contains the official's understanding of Denmark's history and the Danes' transformation from hardy, free-born Vikings to a soft and docile breed. He also indicated why things had gone wrong: material wealth and an over-protective Government. There is no reason to regard the statement as anything other than a worried diplomat's hasty assessment, but he put his finger on two characteristic features of the Danish society in the first half of the 20th century, i.e. increasing affluence and the growth of the welfare state.

    Extractions: The Natural History Museum was founded in 1955. Its object is to collect, preserve, and display items which illustrate the natural environment of the Faroe Islands. The work of making new exhibitions and improving the old ones goes on continuously. The exhibitions are housed in two buildings. Research plays an important part in the work. The museum is divided into three departments: The Geology Department, The Zoology Department, and the Botany Department. Nine people are employed at the museum. The Geology Department is responsible for all general matters concerning geology. Geological mapping both at sea and ashore has been an important part of the work. When the land mapping of the Faroes was completed in the 1960s, a study of the sea-bed was started. In 1980-81 two deep-drillings were carried out, 660 and 2178 m deep. In 1992 the Faroe Islands gained legislative authority over, and the right to manage, the natural resources in the Faroese continental shelf. The authorities have since decided to initiate exploration for oil and gas. The Geology Department plays an important role in this project. The Geology Department cooperates closely with the Geological Survey of Denmark.

He and his son, Harald I (Harald Bluetooth), unified Denmark; their successors also came to rule England Norway , and part of Sweden . This empire fell apart after the death of King Canute in 1035, but descendants of Gorm the Old continued to reign in Denmark. Today's Danish royal family is descended from the Viking kings. In 1397, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden formed the Kalmar Union under Margaret I. Born a Danish princess, she had married King Haakon VI of Norway. Although her nephew Eric of Pomerania was the official king of all three countries, it was Margaret who ruled them until her death in 1412. Sweden left the Kalmar Union in 1523 and elected its own king, but Norway remained united with Denmark until 1814, when Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden. After Norway became independent from Sweden in 1905, its new government offered the crown to Prince Carl, second son of Denmark's future King Frederick VIII. After being approved in a popular vote by the Norwegian people, the prince ascended Norway's throne as King Haakon VII. Iceland was also under the Danish crown from the 14th century onward. It became a separate state in 1918, but did not end its connection with the Danish monarchy until 1944, when it became a republic.

In 1274 he observed the sunlatitude from Roskilde where he was a canon, and based on these observations he made tables showing the length of day and nights. Later he published a widespread calender in Paris. There is some indication in the sources, that he didn't believe in the relation between astrology and astronomy which was the common belief at that time. In 1417 were " Speculum Planetarum " published by Johannes Simones de Selandia a book about the movements of the planets, very little is known of Johannes. The astronomers Tycho Brahe and Christian Longomontanus. The most famous Danish astronomer was Tycho Brahe , who was born as a nobleman in 1546. As a teenager he went to the University of Copenhagen to study civics which was important for a young nobleman at that time because the leaders of Denmark were a group of rich noblemen (many of whom were related to Tycho). However the young man was more interested in the stars, and on a long study tour around Europe he met many of the leading astronomers of his time. On this trip he also lost a part of his nose in a duel, and the rest of his life he had to wear a silver-nose.

Conclusion [Back to menu] Christian IV (reigned 1588-1648) was the first Danish king to establish connections with Jews. This happened because he needed a mintmaster to run the Mint in the newly planned town of Glückstadt on the Elbe and, in 1619, Albert Dionis (Denis) was appointed to this post. Dionis, a Sephardi Jew, "of the Portuguese nation" as they came to be designated in Denmark, had settled in Hamburg in 1605 where he developed an extensive import-export business. Dionis thus became the first Jew to be issued a royal Danish letter of protection. After consulting with Dionis in 1622, King Christian IV invited "Portuguese" Jews from Amsterdam and Hamburg to settle in Glückstadt in the hope that this town would compete with Hamburg. To attract enterprising merchants with disposable capital, a large number of trading privileges, as well as freedom of religion were offered. The privileges given to these Jews were broadened on several occasions until they obtained, among others, the right to trade freely in Denmark and throughout the seventeenth century they provided luxury goods to the Danish court and arranged large loans for the Danish kings. Some "German" (Ashkenazi) Jews traded in Denmark but they had to be able to produce a special letter of safe conduct, since privileges concerning the right to trade and live in Denmark only applied to the "Portuguese" Jews. In 1667, however, the Jews from Altona near Hamburg were empowered to travel and trade freely in Denmark which included Norway and Schleswig-Holstein.

    Extractions: From the German occupation headquarters at the Hotel D'Angleterre came the decree: ALL JEWS MUST WEAR A YELLOW ARMBAND WITH A STAR OF DAVID. That night the underground transmitted a message to all Danes. 'From Amalienborg Palace, King Christian has given the following answer to the German command that Jews must wear a Star of David. The King has said that one Dane is exactly the same as the next Dane. He himself will wear the first Star of David and he expects that every loyal Dane will do the same.' The next day in Copenhagen, almost the entire population wore armbands showing a Star of David. The following day the Germans rescinded the order. Variations: In some versions of the legend, after the Germans announce their intention to implement the order, King Christian responds by stating that he too will wear the armband. The Germans then rescind (or never implement) the order. A popular version of the legend has King Christian sporting an armband as he makes his daily morning horseback ride through the streets of Copenhagen, explaining to citizens that he wears the Star of David as a demonstration of the principle that all Danes are equal. The Germans then cancel the order.
