Dengue Fever is an illness caused by infection with one of four serotypes of a virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus. Infection with one of these serotypes does not provide cross-protective immunity, so a person living in an area where Dengue Fever transmission occurs can have four dengue fever infections during his or her lifetime. Who gets Dengue Fever? Dengue Fever occurs primarily in tropical areas, including the Caribbean and Mexico in North America. Anyone living in or visiting tropical areas may become ill with Dengue Fever. How is Dengue Fever spread? Dengue Fever is spread through the bite of certain species of mosquitoes, but only if they are infected with the Dengue Fever virus. Capable species of mosquitoes pick up the Dengue Fever infection by biting a human who is ill with Dengue Fever. These vector mosquitoes are found near human habitations and are often present indoors. Dengue Fever transmissions is usually seasonal, during and shortly after the rainy season. Dengue fever is characterized by sudden onset, high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, nausea/vomiting, and rash. The rash may appear 3-4 days after the onset of fever. Infection is diagnosed by a blood test that detects the presence of the virus or antibodies. The illness may last up to 10 days, but complete recovery can take 2-4 weeks. Dengue Fever is commonly confused with other infectious illnesses such as influenza, measles, malaria, typhoid, leptospirosis, and scarlet fever. The symptoms of dengue fever can be treatedwith bed rest, fluids, and medications to reduce Dengue Fever. There is no vaccine for dengue fever. The risk of dengue fever for each geographic area will have variations. The risk of Dengue Fever is generally higher in urban areas.

The viruses are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. In the Western Hemisphere, the Aedes aegypti mosquito is the most important vector of dengue viruses, but it is not found in Hong Kong. Aedes albopictus mosquito, which is prevalent in Hong Kong, is a less efficient epidemic vector. The incubation period of dengue fever ranges from 3 to 14 days. Forekomsten af dengue er steget kraftigt i de seneste 10 år, hvilket bl.a. er tilskrevet den tiltagende urbanisering. Symptomerne er høj feber, udslet, hovedpine og muskelsmerter som ved en alvorlig influenza. Der findes 4-typer dengue virus, og smitte med en type giver ikke beskyttelse mod de andre typer. I sjældne tilfælde kan dengue infektionen udvikle nedsat evne for blodet at størkne, og man får en såkaldt "hæmorrhagisk dengue", hvor man kan se dødsfald af f.eks. nyresvigt. Dengue hæmorrhagisk feber ses hos 0,2% af førstegangs infektioner og hos ca. 2% af personer, der tidligere har haft en dengue infektion, og smittes igen. Der findes ingen behandling og ingen vaccine. Dengue forebygges ved at undgå at blive stukket af myg. De myg der overfører dengue stikker mest tidligt om morgenen og sent på eftermiddagen/tidligt om aftenen. Man kan nedsætte risiko for myggestik ved at sprøjte boligen indendørs med et insektmiddel, f.eks. et syntetisk pyrethrum middel.
